Protecting My Bur Oak from Browsing Deer

A little #Shorts video of me spritzing my recovering bur oak tree with deer repellant because of a recent deer browsing incident. I thought the tree would be safe in the summer, but it was growing rapidly and had lots of tender young leaves right at browsing height for the deer! Add to that the fact that the tree is right in the path of the deer that pass through the area and I guess it was just too tempting.

Normally deer wouldn't browse on tree leave in summer, but it was like a perfect storm of temptation! 😉

The trees did very well this year — the third year since planting them. I will be doing a big update on the same day that I did it last year, and will be calipering the trunks, measuring the heights, and giving an overall assessment of their condition. Stay tuned!

Just a quick #short to show the deer damage to this tree before it is unrecognizable. I trimmed the damaged areas back to a clean cut, and the tree put out new growth almost immediately! The new growth is past where the original growth was when the damage occurred so all is well 😊

Enjoy your Bur Oak updates. What deer repellent / mixture do you use? Deer destroyed a persimmon sapling we planted this year and also girdled Sycamore and Cottonwood saplings.
