Fun fact: if keep doing this for a bit, the game will glitch and make the 1-up song a little start before the classic song 1-up song actually starts

When you land on a Goomba hold "A" to jump high, if you dont, you just bounce off the Goomba and land on the ground.

Used this trick to win an NES tournament where you're given 10mins in SMB3 to get the highest score. Only difference was I touched the ground before scoring the 1up to reset the count

This trick is easier done on the dry bones in the Desert Hill fortress as they can't die and will always reawake at the direction of Mario.

You can also do this in the first castle on World 2 with the 3 skeleton koopas. Once you hit the 3rd the 1st should be reviving just in time. Did this stuff 30 years ago

Number of ppl who don't understand that Raccoon Mario (just the ears and tail) and Tanuki Mario (the brown suit with round ears) are two different things in SMB3 is plentiful.

In DS/3DS Mario games the leaf gives Mario Tanuki Suit (the brown one) but in this game (where the concept was introduced) things were different.

There is another one of these in the first fortress of Desert Hill (world 2). There are three Dry Bones next to a Thwomp.

You just unlocked an old memory of mine!

When I was a kid, I would play Mario 3 with my grandma (of all people). She had her own NES at her place. When she'd play this level, she'd do this trick. I'd get so annoyed, because her turn took so damn long! She would speed run the rest of the level once it gave the warning music speedup, having racked up enough lives for the rest of the game (not that she needed them). I didn't understand the 1-ups she was getting, so I thought she was just grinding goombas for score (which I figured didn't matter).

This is basically a slow version of the infinite 1-Up shell trick.

The same thing can be done in the first fortress in World 2. There’s a trio of dry bones in the beginning of the stage. Using the racoon tail to slow your descent will allow the first one to reconstruct itself by the time you’re coming down after landing on the third.

You can also do this at the first castle. There is a part with 3 drybones. You can bounce and slowly fall with the tail and they will keep getting back up fast enough that there is always one to land on and you can rack up the extra lives.
