Hi, i thought plumbers mait or putty is not reccomended for use on plastic? My shower trap is plastic so would this work? Or will it fail after time? Last plumber used silicone and it failed and caused lots of damp to timbers. Thanks.

In some cases I use silicon and it’s doing the work

Is that paper ring really needed since it’s only the top portion that spins and not the bottom flange?

Check for leak and DONE! lol. There is still a big hole in the ceiling, my friend. Although to be fair patching a hole can be a separate video. The most annoying thing about American ceiling is that, they almost always have all different kinds of stupid popcorn pattern that's impossible to recreate. I think in Canada you simply sand it down to a smooth surface. Nice and simple.
