Advancing with Watercolor: Texture - 'Lobsterman's Backyard'

This is a video done as a supplement to a watercolor class taught by Gary Tucker in Boston.
While walking around the quaint village of Marblehead one is drawn to the tiny alleys and on occasion a great motif. The scene is commonplace which sometimes yields a more creative painting. My students were somewhat surprised as I started to set up my equipment in front of the fishing shacks. I found a respectable motif at a god time of day. Plenty of opportunity for texture using drybrush and other unorthodox applications.

Painted on rough paper using mop brushes and a sablette brush as well as well. cobalt blue, sap green, b sienna, and neutral tint...

Thank you

Being outside is important! However, spring and fall are wonderful times to be outside all day. Summer can be unbearably hot (so I usually will just do a couple of studies and go home) and in winter the paint doesn't dry. I'm using this summer to do a lot of monochrome because spring and fall are so colorful and can be distracting. I'm realizing the only way I'll get really good at tonal value is to keep doing a lot of monochrome -- and I'd like to hear from many of you about how you feel about learning tones and how you approach it.

Analyzing and completing a painting or sketch establishes a memory more lasting than a visual memory--much like handwriting a note vs keyboarding a note does. I'm sure that it has something to do with the hand-eye movement. I was interested to see how you simplified the complicated stacks of lobster cages.

Gary, I notice you use that small black and red brush and start the wash with some kind of bamboo brush. Can you name those brushes. Thank you for sharing all your knowledge
