Vintage Camper vs Scamp Trailer!

Which small camper trailer is better for your needs? A scamp trailer or a vintage trailer? As a family who has utilized both campers throughout the state of Alaska, we are excited to help you decide which 13' trailer is best for you!

Although both of these small campers are 13 ft trailers, we think they actually have more differences than they do similarities. Do you plan to spend more time outside at the campsite or are you looking for a little home on wheels? One of these trailers is a lot harder to pull. Is your towing vehicle up for the challenge? Layout is king in a small travel trailer. And one of these trailer layouts may leave you wanting. BUT, either trailer you choose you aren't going to regret it! The 13' vintage camper and 13' Scamp camper are two of our absolute favorite campers on the road today.

Awww thanks for the shout!!! Your videos are always the best! It would be so cool if Scamp did a redesign of the space. I hear they’re on a 2 year back order though, so they probably don’t have much incentive to change! Barron’s brother is remodeling a 15ft canned ham and I’m a little jealous of the headroom and space!!

Great video! I love the vintage but I like the fiberglass build. Can’t wait to see more of the boys:) 😘

Really enjoyed this comparison! I was surprised by some of the big differences. Definitely food for thought! 😬

Getting awfully close to 100K subs! Appreciate your channel. All of the pros/cons videos really helped me decide to choose and buy my off-road teardrop (similar to Valiant but made in MN). Love the AK vibes as well. I have family in Wasilla, Big Lake, and ANC and your vids have helped with my AK withdrawal during COVID.

Did we miss anything? Or does this bring up any additional questions. Would love to hear any of your thoughts, comments, and questions regarding 13' trailers.

Yes. The ability to quickly stop to eat or use the camper is a definite benefit.
The one huge complaint I hear over and over from family members towing pop-ups is their inability to just stop and eat in the camper without a lot of work. As I am more of a travel-camper than stay-put camper, a fast setup like the Shasta or Scamp would really be appreciated. Good point.

This was a fun vid. I absolutely love my vintage 1969 Shasta Compact. I'll take the space over a Scamp any day. I also love the shape of it (SO vintage!) and I feel like ours tows like a dream behind our Chevy Tahoe. :-)

quality videos, you always put in tons of detail and are thorough. thanks for sharing. for me, i like rounded designs, so on that alone the scamp wins. but what you've done with the interior of your vintage trailer, it looks high end. great job

Fantastic video! We love our vintage but the tongue weight is an issue. On the other hand, you'll never get the trailer to sway with all the weight up front. Your family is too cute and your camping scenery is great.

You got a good point my sister in law had a coachman trailer with the kitchen up front and it made the trailer feel larger than it really was but that trailer was too heavy for my vehicles. The coachman would have made a better place to stay on my property in the NC mountains. One that i could have hauled in and left on the property. 73

Succinct, practical info. I'm in the market currently and this is a big help. Thank you.

Another great video! You hit the nail on the head for why we love our vintage trailer, and while I sought one out, is the great efficiency of space! When we rebuilt our trailer, we put in a canvas hammock-type bunk. I wish I hadn't done that, it really takes away from the space below it, and our youngest quickly outgrew the weight capacity.

Random question, starting at 9:00, in the background is a chair, kind of like your other REI chair, but with a much higher back. What is that chair? I have a super cheap version of that, but all the stitching is coming apart, and I'd like to buy a nicer version of that chair.

One towing difference is the axle. A torsion axle is used on the Scamp compared to a leaf springs on the Shasta. I was amazed with the torsion axle vs leaf spring difference following two new homebuilt teardrops. The leaf spring teardrop looked like it was bouncing down the road vs rock solid with the torsion axle.
However, Torsion axles need to be replaced as they wear out a lot sooner.
