The LEGO MINDSTORMS theme has been a staple for the company since the theme was first introduced in 1998 but it looks like the theme will be ending at the end of 2022. With LEGO Education and other Build & Code experiences in place, they are shifting priorities and the LEGO MINDSTORMS team will be redirected into other departments.

Lego robotics goes back to 1987, when it started with the 9750 interface A under the DACTA label. Before RCX we also had interface B. A was programmed with mostly 8-bit home computers, B was more targetted at the early DOS PC audience.

I always wanted to buy one of these mindstorm robots, but they are expensive. Lego products in general are too expensive.

Spike is just on its way out as well. Problems with Spike:
1) Availability is abysmal
2) Colour scheme looks like it is for Pre-school
3) Brick selection has nothing to do with making robot prototypes
4) Pricing is sky high as Lego only allows educational sellers
5) Because of that availability is abysmal
6) If you are in education, you give up or start looking somewhere else, for example in the micro:bit ecosystem combined with 3D printing.

I’d say inclement ChatGPT inside the software Lego mindstorms because this could actually work for the new generation of Lego mindstorms as technology evolves so will detect in video games as we know it. This is because technology itself is evolving fast and we could probably see whole new generation of Lego education products coming more quickly into robotics by implementing the powerful AI ChatGPT would work.

If Mindstorms should make a comeback, Lego would have to come up with the “SLEEKEST” and “MOST FUTURISTIC” technology. Sensors that everyone has been waiting for, like gyroscopic and camera and depth sensors and even external RGB LED Lighting bricks, an intelligent brick with a new external color LCD or OLED touchscreen graphical interface that allows your robot to have its own face, and allows for video playback, and even more complex programming from the intelligent brick itself, with external keyboard and mouse compatibility for writing more complex code without a computer, and the support for downloading third party apps and firmware onto the brick itself. The brick will be Smaller and Thinner than the EV3 as well, but still have the same number of Ports like USB Type-A, USB Type-C and Motor/Sensor/Lighting control ports. And unlike Spike Prime, it should use USB Type-C instead of Mini-USB for charging and have a rechargeable battery like the Spike Prime. And, when the external modular touchscreen quits working and quits responding to your touch, the intelligent brick itself you can control the cursor the old fashioned EV3 way using the selector buttons to navigate the interface. It should be THE MOST ADVANCED Lego Mindstorms set ever, even more advanced than EV3!!! And Lego should also provide an external Bluetooth remote controller in the box with analog joysticks that resemble console controllers to precisely adjust the speed and power of the robot.

I fell off mindstorms and actually physically using lego years ago (digital toys like Minecraft are doing well enough at scratching that itch in my adult life at a much lower cost, which considering my income...) but a big problem I always saw with the mindstorms model was trying to pack so much into the core brick.

This made building problems. You ended up with a big heavy block of features you may not need which your robot would have to be tied to or haul around, which is an increasing problem in a world where it's harder and harder to afford huge lego sets, and doesn't fit with a lot of modern robotics which is trying to work on minimalism and miniaturization.

It also drove up the cost of the core unit and made cross-generation compatibility a real problem.

Rather than packing more and more features into it, focusing on modularity of smaller cheaper components and having the core brick just be a hub of connection points, with possibly even the batter(y/ies) being a different brick due to size, weight, and not every robot having the same power requirements would allow lower barriers to entry and mindstorms to be something you could use to incrementally add functionality to other sets rather than being a massive investment that everything else has to be built around.



At this stage though, sad to say, I don't know that it can be saved. The economic situation is different and anyone who would really get into and stick with Mindstorms from a young age is also likely to be drawn into things like modding creative games like Minecraft which just wasn't a thing Mindstorms had to compete with originally.

LEGO may have bricked themselves into a corner on this one unless there's some way forward I'm not seeing.
