It might appear that way but no don't. The one you turn by hand acts as a generator and the other uses that electricity to turn as a normal motor. The gearing allows for the motor acting as a generator to spin fast enough to generate a decent voltage and current and propel the connected second motor.

It because when you rotate it it will generate power like a generator. So if you connect it to other motor it will spin by the generated power.

Spinning the motor generates electricity which is then sent through the wire and temporarily powers the second motor, the motors do not move exactly the same because of the impossibility of perfect energy transfer

DC motor are reverse dynamo, the same goes for both way.

The ones from 23 years ago did that too. I had the very first generation with the big yellow brick. And to echo others: there's no battery in the motors, they're just acting as a generator and motor.

Every electromotor is a generator, every generator is an electromotor, every LED is a solar panel and every solar panel is a very large, very inefficient LED

No battery. Not needed. Motor==generator. Wires connect. Gearing covers the rest.
