Acrylic White Paint Review (HD)

Seems a little far fetched doesn’t it?

That your white paint could be ruining your Acrylic paintings.

It’s often the first tube of paint you buy and definitely the most used on your palette … yet can be the most overlooked paint in your collection.

You can become transfixed by the Quinacridones, save up for the expensive Cadmiums but little old Titanium white stays the same.

Choosing the ‘right’ white for the type of painting you’re creating is a critical step in mastering painting with acrylics.

So what is the right Acrylic white to use?

Very thorough and helpful review of whites, thank you! A very nice tip about usage for zinc or mixing whites, I hadn't thought that having a largely trasparent white could be a benefit, but having a large volume of mixed paint with a subtly lighter value definitely has its applications.

Thankyou. I will return to your site many times. I am struggling with the greens in landscapes. I appreciated your analogy to a bad green "poking you in the eye". Those greens are easy to mix.

This was incredible! I started acrylic painting recently and have never tried my hand in any kind of art. I've had so much trouble in making my colors lighter because I had zinc white and always had to add a tiny bit of blue to the white instead of vice versa. Thank you so much..this is going to be really helpful to me!

Thanks for this informative video. I watched it because I was having trouble getting my whites to cover . Found it interesting about how some paints dry a lot darker too. I didn't know that Daler -Rowney was that good quality. I may give it a try.

I am now watching this after knowing about Will for a few years. What a fantastic demo. I recently bought some Golden HB Zinc white and will do my own experiments with it compared to the Titanium white. I have faith that Will has clarified what I will experience. ;-)

Will first of all thank you for giving me an interest back in painting and for all the information. I'm an amateur painter - very amateur, and I'm a bit overwhelmed with transparency and opaque. I've done Van Gogh successfully. I love him and can get a  feel for his work but I'm almost finished Monet's Japanese Footbridge as a gift and it's very very dull. When I introduced lighter colours they became very loud and false so I'm wondering if I should repaint the whole thing. I'm using Galeria Titanium, and W&N Alizerum Crimson and the rest is Dale Rowney System 3. I've watched almost all your videos and am a subscriber for quite a while now. I've never had any classes because I'm too broke :)

Especially helpful was the info on zinc white and how we can use it to make subtle value changes.

I'm lucky, Golden is manufactured just down the road from a farm I own in upstate New York.  Don't know if you can get "seconds" from them though.

The comparison with the brushstrokes has not persuaded me really. I know from experience that it depends on the amount of the colour on the paintbrush, the number of the brushstrokes how well the colour White or another bright colour covers a dark colour.
Even though many thanks for this insight into these white tones.

Will, nice review of the different whites. I have a few question though. First, do the differences in these paints that you show apply across the other colors from these brands? Second, I noticed you didn't include Liquitex Heavy Body. Do you consider it equivalent to the Golden Heavy Body that you used? Lastly, a popular professional acrylic artist here in the U.S. uses only Grumbacher white gesso instead of any white paint. He says that with this, "you can create a soft, blended, oil-like effect with the plastic look" of white paints. What's your thoughts about this?

Thank you very much for this review ! I was quite pertubed because I have just bought Golden Open Titanium white and it's so different from the Liquitex I was used to buy... very "liquid" and translucent ... I think that I will buy again the Liquitex white because the Golden can't be used for any purpose ... :/
