Back in the 2000s, Penn and Teller had a show called "Bullsh*t. They did exactly this on one of their episodes, having one of their crew serve a number of instant and boxed foods to food critics, putting an exotic story behind them, serving on a fancy plate, and asking them what they thought. For example, they took non-dairy Dream Whip and said it was a highly specific regional Bavarian cream that required a special process to make. And of course...every critic had high praise for the food. They did another episode where they filled a number of fancy-labeled water bottles with the same garden hose tap water, putting a different story behind where each came from, and asked people which water they liked best. And nobody could tell there was no difference between them.

I could have watched an hour long version of this honestly 🤣 the worst part is that they probably weren’t lying about how good the noodles were, because instant noodles ARE tasty by themselves, and adding other components just makes them tastier! It’s also a great social study on how influencers thrive off feeling like they’re part of a special “exclusive” club based on their following count lol “I have x amount of followers so I should be picked to eat at this new fancy restaurant” lol
