Replacing Toilet Mounting Flange On Cast Iron Piping System With Least Renovation

In older and sometimes more historic neighborhoods of North America one can often find their home has a cast iron drainage piping system where the toilet begins to leak at the base even after the plumber has been by and replaced the seal or repaired that rocking toilet.

This is how to replace the whole mount without doing any major renovation of the piping system

Just know your video is still getting it done. I had nearly this exact issue - non existent flange on a cement pad into cast. Constantly leaking. Your video gave me the encouragement I needed to get it done. Thanks.

You think maybe you doing the work would be more helpful to people watching the video than just talking about doing it?

I sort of wish he showed the actual removal process it would have been much more helpful.

Using 2 wax seal with the first repair is recommended due to the low/ below the floor toilet flange flange due to tile work. When ever you have a level flange to the floor you always use 2wax seal one regular and one with the flange. Regular one goes on first then flange one goes on top this puts flange in the middle of both waxes to make direct water downward and for a better seal from toilet to flange

You didn't show how to remove the old and put in the new. That would have been helpful.

I have a cement basement floor. After removing old toilet I see it's a 3 inch cast iron pipe and that the 2 flange bolts that secure the toilet are fixed into the concrete floor and presume the flange was just cemented in. Could I simply stick a new flanged wax ring on and call it good or is it important to have a water-tight fit between cast iron pipe and newly installed flange?

Would have been nice if he showed the removal of the old flange. Unless we r in our 70s. We probably haven't dealt with installing lead/cast iron toilet flanges

does a toilet need an extra trap when installing into a concrete basement floor ? Thanks ( kinda off topic but I need help )

I have a lead “lug” inserted into cast iron, like you showed. Is it possible to remove the entire lug, so that I just have the cast iron?

Hi Don, we’re doing a bathroom renovation in a pre-war building in NYC and our rough-in is 8 inches and we want to use an offset flange for a 10 inch rough in toilet. The pipe is metal, and the offset flange is pvc by Oatey I believe. Is that fine to do? Thanks for your video!

For those of you hoping this video would complete your task, get on hand & knee, glove up, mask up (if disturbing lead by filing or grinding) get dirty...get gooey...& fill in the gaps of your knowledge. Imformation within the video corresponds with the title as should.

Exactly how clean and smooth must the cast iron pipe be for the Twist and Set to seal properly? I took a wire wheel to mine and it's smooth but uneven. Will it still work?

Make sure you drill the lead, from what I hear optimal height is 1/4 in above the floor

Went to fix a leaky toilet in the basement that my dad had previously fixed. Found two pieces of PVC pipe cut in half (as in down the walls into two half circles) and pushed down into a cracked cast iron elbow. So I have a cracked cast iron elbow right before the pipe straight up to the toilet would go and it's surrounded in concrete with tile on top.

How does that rubber piece tighten on the insert extension - just by compression? Or is there some sort of twisting motion required to set it in place against the inner pipe?

The wax ring gets 1/16" clearance between the plastic flange and toilet, so is that a problem? It may even get zero clearance--and would that be a problem with sewer gas? (or not?)
