Former Shell Oil President John Hofmeister has tried to answer that question for a long time, even writing a book called “Why We Hate the Oil Companies.” He explains that entities that enjoy record profits, while setting seemingly arbitrary prices for gas, are natural targets. “I would often get asked, ‘How do you live in your own skin?’“ he says.
