The history of ancient Greek wars, one of which is the Peloponnese war, the civil war between Athens and Sparta. Thucydides wrote of the essence of the Peloponnesian War as "as
a contest arising on the one hand from the desire for power and on the other from the fear of that same power". Donald Kagan (Ohio State University) made the periodization of the Peloponnesian War in 3 periods: Period I (431-421 BC), Period of Peace ( 421-413 BC) Period II (421-404 BC).
In 432 BC. a conference of polis members of the Peloponnesian League was held with the aim of taking joint action against Athens. The conference was also attended by delegates from Athens. Sparta requested that Athena no longer take actions that are detrimental to other policies. Athena refused, and stated that her heroism in the "Persian War" must be respected. Finally Sparta declared war on Athens.
Athens' defeat was caused by Persian interference which helped Sparta fight Athens, Persia gave money, ships and war equipment to Sparta.
The last battle that marked the end of the civil war was the battle of Aegospotomi in 405 BC. The Spartan army led by Lysander managed to defeat the Athenian army. finally in 404 Athens surrendered to Sparta.
the civil war resulted in weak Greek defenses so that the Macedonians and Romans in the future managed to control all of Greece.
