If George is right, and I m sure he is, that undergraduates are using GIS rather than getting into rhe field, then that was so sad. As i said elsewhere I was lucky enough to recently visit Paviland cave .I knew before visiting that i wasnt goung to make any spectacular new discoveries, but the chamce to be somewhere where our ancestors actually lived, to be in a space which rhey occupied 30000 yrs ago ....its a thrill you dont get from being on a computer. Same when i visited the caves around Les Eyzies many years ago. And you absolutely learn something unique from physically being somewhere..
On Genevieve's point about citizen science I guess you'd need more expertise than i have to get involved in a paleoanthropology cotizen science project and i cant see any out there, but sounds like a great idea if one could be made to work. There's nothing like getting your hands dirty to get people enthused.

Interesting, but the editing is so very very discomforting
