I review, breakdown and explain Severance Season 2 Episode 8. I give my reaction to the Apple TV+ show which stars Adam Scott as Mark as we saw Harmony Cobel return to Salt’s Neck and relive her past. I discuss the ending which saw her speaking with Mark, us finding out that she created the Severance procedure, not Jame Eagan, her mirrored connection with Miss Huang and her mother Charlotte Cobel and how she’s going to take down Lumon by revealing what Cold Harbor is and why Lumon are interested in Gemma. I also give my theories and predictions on episode 9.

We finally got to see Harmony Cobel again! What did you think of the shortest episode of the season? I feel like it could be a divisive one! Share your thoughts in the comments

Seems to me like Harmony's motivation for developing severance was an attempt to save her mother from pain/illness/death, after getting lung disease from working in a Lumon factory.

Jame/Eagan family/Lumon funded the concept and are trying to expand it to be used in an endless amount of ways so people don't have to be "awake" for bad experiences, such as going to the dentist, flying on aeroplanes etc. (that's what they're using Gemma for) and even childbirth. They are ultimately working out to see if you can be severed from experiencing death (Cold Harbor being the final stage).

The overall goal for Lumon – commercial use and therefore huge profit, with the potential to control populations too.

Harmony is now obviously pissed, as it is her concept. Helena would have no knowledge of this, hence her cockiness when dismissing Harmony.

Interesting that in Harmony Cobel’s Valedictorian write-up in the Myrtle Eagan School for Girls yearbook it states among her accomplishments that she was the President of the Goat Husbandry Club.

We can not assume Cobel just fully reverses that conditioning and switches sides. I suspect she's just turning on the present leadership -- not on Kier's ideology.

Also, we all knew Cobel was a smart woman, but she's in fact a genuine genius.

thank you guys for actually analyzing the show instead of just doing a recap like all these other severance episode channels!!!!

It’s honestly disappointing to see so many people criticizing the length of the episode. The Season 1 finale was practically the same length, yet no one seemed to have an issue then. This episode was absolutely necessary for much-needed character development.

This show has been nothing short of perfection—stellar cast, incredible acting, and a plot that keeps us constantly guessing. Other people in the industry should be taking notes because this is how you create top-tier television. No wonder this show has become the biggest buzz on the internet! I couldn’t disagree more with all the negativity.

Last week was Gemma and Mark’s backstory, this week was Cobel’s. People are complaining it was slow, but it was perfect. It was the first episode where I was able to clearly think while it was airing and make connections in the moment without stopping, rewinding, making a mental note to look it up later, etc. In the canon of Severance, episode 8 is doctrinal. It’s bedrock. We now understand why she was “stalking” Mark. She was merely doing scientific observations of her project. It’s why she also knew about reintegration and was furious when Natalie and the Board told her otherwise. How could they possibly know better than she did? That’s why she was so angry. And it explains her ability to adroitly remove Petey’s chip.

She endured a terrible childhood, working 10 hour shifts cooking ether, while her mother, friends, and neighbors got sicker and addicted. No wonder she dreamt up severing from her work self. I doubt she knew how far it would go. She remained loyal to Lumon after they swindled her because she trauma bonded with Kier Egan. And she hurt others as bad as she was hurt because that’s what trauma survivors often do, unintentionally.

She was living with great cognitive dissonance. What finally caused her to accept how badly she had been used was Helena telling her, “You’ve overestimated your contributions and underestimated your blessings.” (paraphrase). What a burn! That was Harmony’s final straw. She returned to Salt Lick specifically for those detailed plans of the system. She hates Lumon, she wants vengeance, she designed it all, she has the hard copies of it, Mark is reintegrated, and she’s on the phone with him! I can’t imagine a more exciting turn of events.

The next 2 episodes are gonna be nuts!

Now, all those scenes from season one make sense. Her obsession with the board and her anger at being ignored or not even spoken to by them…

Her strong belief in the possibility of reintegration and her fixation on her "subjects, " Mark and Gemma, are also more understandable. 🤯

I loved the episode! Beautifully shot, emotional, and we learned so much!

I did wonder why Milchick and Cobel we're not severed. Huang was the first clue i picked up on as to why. Indoctrination from childhood.

Harmony has said both that her mother was an atheist -- and a Catholic. As someone who did NOT believe in Keir -- that could qualify as an "atheist". As a devout Catholic, her mother could also be considered an atheist since she didn't believe in Keir. Remember, the Christians in ancient Rome were convicted as atheists since they refused to participate in Caesar worship.

I don’t think Cobel is necessarily changing sides. I think she just wants the credit or still wants to achieve something for everything she has done up to this point. Remember it’s a cult it’s very hard to break free of it. Even during this episode she still has that cult like thinking of Keir with outsiders. I don’t trust that’s she’s completely on Marks side. I think she has an ulterior motive to achieving whatever the end game is.

Such a well produced episode in that we understood all we needed to know about Cobel’s childhood without any flashbacks that are so common these days.

Harmony and Mark are gonna bust Gemma out, saving her from Cold Harbor (likely death or near-death). Harmony will hack, hijack, and own the severance system, Mark won't be affected because he's reintegrated. Once Gemma is out, Harmony will either burn Lumon to the ground or rewrite the system so it answers only to her. Hail to the Queen?

We can officially put to bed all theories of Huang being a clone or something. Nope - she's just in a cult.

Cobel : "Tell me Eveything..."
Mark and Devon should be: "No, You, TELL Us EVERYTHING !"

I really don't understand the backlash for this episode. The writers don't do anything in this show by accident. It's valuable character progression.

Mark and Harmony were reintegrating at the same time, one with a chip, the other with an ideology
