I'm having a lot of difficulties pronouncing りょう such as in cooking. I keep trying, but to my ears it sounds rather similar to just outright saying よ but has the slightest of "r" sounds in it. It always comes out as if I'm pronouncing り そして よ separately. I'm sure it sounds like I have a weird accent in Japanese. Any further insights?

I find these sounds really hard. My Japanese teacher is called りょこ and I feel really awkward about my terrible pronunciation of her name!

I’ve been trying to get these down daily for months now. Nothing I’ve tried helps. My tongue just freezes up in between and can’t create a single cohesive sound, always a jagged pause between. After years of studying Japanese I might just call it quits, if I can’t make the basic sounds after so much practice, there’s no point in having the reading and listening skills I’ve accumulated.

I don't know what everyone's hearing that they find so helpful. I've listened to this video several times and I can't hear any difference between the normal and blended R. The tongue pictures make no sense at all, how do I make my tongue curl into the back of my throat for the o sound? None of it makes sense.

I don't speak Japanese, but stopped pronouncing Ryu as "Rye-yoo" once I heard how his name was pronounced in Japanese. It's actually irritating that some people still chose to mispronounce Ryu even after hearing how to properly say the name.

Why in the world do we translate it as RYU RYA RYO instead of DYU DYA and DYO?!?! There is no "R" sound in any of these words so why would we translate them into English that way? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ So Yoshin-Ryu is pronounced Yoshin-DYU not Yoshin-RYU almost like Yousindo or Karatedo.... see what I mean? Is RYU "school" and Do- "way of life"?
