Hi, this video tests various HDMI leads for compatibility with 4K and HDR televisions. It tries to answer the question of whether you need to buy a new HDMI 2.0a cable when you upgrade to a 4K television.
In the video the setup used is a Xbox One S console and a Samsung UHD (4K) TV (model no: UE40KU6000K). Both 4K and HDR have been enabled.
HDMI cables ranging from 8 year old cables to new cables and also £1 shop cheap cables are tested.
Many thanks Vince

I get asked why I go ‘cheap’ on HDMI cables to hook to expensive components and your video proves why I don’t. Thanks!!

At last someone who talks sense. Very nice video. I've just bought a 4k TV and 4K Blu-Ray player and have been agonising over which cables to get. I think the lesson here is that you don't need to get ridiculously expensive cables, but don't get ridiculously cheap ones either.

You call this a test ?
Just plug in a cable and bamm i see a menu sow it works?!
We need to see gameplay and movies !! And yes 4k picture works with an old hdmi but if u want 60 hertz or frames and hdr you will need hdmi 2.0a or even beter a displayport (for pc)

Awesome video Vince. I just had to replace an hdmi cable that i bought for 20 bucks. did my 3 month cleaning on my computer and hooked everything back up and no picture. went and grabbed one of my spare hdmi cables that's about 5 years old and boom picture came up in an instant and i cannot tell the difference between the quality. Ran Metro Exodus for a couple of hours and no problems with picture or sound. First time in my life it was a bad cable. usually for me its hardware. phew.

Yeah im not too sure about this. I used hdmi whatever cables for my old 1080 tv. When i went to 4k i used the same cables. After a month or so the signal kept dropping. I switched from that old hdmi cable to the one that came with the ps4 pro and never dropped signal since!

Nice video Vince and the message for me is TRY (the current stuff) before you BUY!

Ihad an Xbox One about two years ago. I was going to use a normal HDMI lead with it, but not one of my HDNI 1.2 or HDMI 1.4 leads would work with it when I connected it to my computer monitor. All I got was a no signal blank screen. I thought the Xbox was broken but I then used the lead that came with the XBOX and I got a picture.

any HDMI cable will work on 2.0 its just that the length of the cable will matter on older version cables due to standards used in v1.4 or below, I have a 0.5meter HDMI cable (a generic one, no brand, no HDMI version mention on the product page) and it works fine on 4k60hz, but if I use a longer older HDMI 1.4 cable its either have sync issue or not work at all.

wrong. this displays your tv capability. try playing a 4k video at 60 fps through a hdmi 1.4 cable and don't be surprised that it doesn't.

What about my Monster M1000HD lead that says ultimate speed? Yeah the brand that we all fell for but would be impressed if that worked on the new PS5 HDR when out? Who knows?

Your a beast! Thank you. Any idea if the same results for audio 7.1 receivers?

Don't expect this to work, I used to use old hdmi cable for playing games in HDR and all the colours were washed out and dim

I used a 1.3 hdmi on my ps4 pro and some games like fifa 19 on 4k & HDR i get a wierd frame drop in the game. When i use the supplied 4k playstation cable, its gone. So there is a difference in bandwith i think

Something of note to add as well, any cables run through a splitter or that have an upscaling chip may also have issues with this support if the splitter does not meet the HDCP 2.2 rating. I've attempted to display the maximum color setup at 4k/60 Hz with these setups and the advanced color options become disabled unless I drop resolution refresh settings to 30 Hz.
