"grep" is a very useful Linux command for the day to day grind. "sed" command is another good one for everyone know.

Great! I've always wanted to get more savvy with grep. Definitely helps in troubleshooting in my job.

Weirdest thing! I just learned about grep yesterday, and I was sitting drinking my morning coffee thinking "Hmmm maybe I should learn som more". I open my computer and look at my YT subs, and the FIRST one is this video! Thanks! :)

I love segments like this. The problem with trying to learn Linux: Nearly everyone writing documentation or "tutorials" assumes you know at least 1 obscure item that is a black hole of information onto itself. Theses segments are a great source of back to basics knowledge that help me fill in the holes in my personal understanding of this frustratingly awesome OS.

Btw: I only discovered hak 5 a month ago....how did she get the handle "SNUBS" ?

It was implemented in the Microsoft Compiler MSVC 6 where it is used to search to lines of code that can be amended to code faster when compiled.
MSVC --- Microsoft Studio Visual C ((6)/(VI)).

Great video Shannon - I have informally used grep for 20 years, and still managed to learn something! :)

Definitely do another one of these with writing regular expressions. RE's are a powerful...powerful tool in the right hands, not just for script Jockey's, but forensic analysts too... also majorly useful... zgrep.

Pretty sure "global regular expression print" is a bacronym, devised long after the grep command was created. There doesn't seem to be a consensus as to the origin of "grep". I think it was just one of those command names that seemed to match what the command does.

First came across regex while playing with python, but haven't committed anything to memory. I've seen grep, but haven't had much use with it. Perhaps it's flash card time
