This is the best video on exercise routine on YouTube, period. I've learned so much in 15 minutes. Big thank you for recommending the book and the sight reading website.

Thanks Tim! I have made piano my COVID skill and have been learning with an online program. However, I have really been finding it’s taking me a long time to learn pieces and I realise it’s because I need to understand scales etc better . You’re an excellent teacher

Worth to note, that all these things need to be practiced properly. What I mean is use proper fingering, play at a speed where you are challenged, yet don't really make mistakes if you are focused, to avoid either getting stuck due to lack of challenge, and getting frustrated+picking up bad habbits through repeated mistakes due to having too much of a challenge.
You did mention the concept at the sight reading part, but I just wanted to comment on that. In general making 0 mistakes while still improving should always be the goal, obviously if you want to challenge yourself this isn't always possible, but mistakes should be avoided and if they happen fixed by any means, instead of just sayin 'oh well i missed 1-2 notes', because such mistakes will get stuck in your muscle memory if you repeat them, so instantly fixing them by e.g. repeating the small passage, or part of the scale, or playing the arpegio in a more comfortable speed without making mistakes is def. good.

Thanks for this! I’ve been struggling trying to find a good routine to follow. I have some questions about scales and arpeggios: when learning them, what do you think is a good way to go about it? One per day? Per week? Should I practice the old ones while learning the new ones? For example should I do C on day 1, then practice a few days, then learn G (while still playing C during practice) and so on? Also, do you recommend practicing all scales, then arpeggios and chords, or do the scale arpeggio and chords of one key then the scale, arpeggio, and chords of the next?

Agree on these. I'm a beginner but had long enough to look at the structure of practice. I would say this practice can or should be done individually if needed, not at once. One session scales, the next chords then scales again etc sight can come later.

Hi Tim,
I have been studying your instructions on note rhythm Counting and it has been splendid! Many thanks. I am in your lessons at Unit 4, Learning to play the piano level 1, and the site I have just finished has been really great to assist me in getting the rhythm correct.
All in you are to be commended for the work you are doing to help others in playing the piano.

I have been teaching my 6 & 7 yo grandkids to play piano. Their attention spans are very short. Like 15 minutes, Maybe 10 minutes for the 6yo boy who is autistic. But on the plus side, instead of practice, they get an actual in person lesson every day with me so that helps a lot. The 7yo girl loves scales and finger exercises so this is a plus. We do begin every lesson with flashcards I made to help them learn note reading One suggestion I have, especially for a younger player, is that after learning the C scale, instead of going to G scale, learn the C scale in 2 octaves even if they cannot read the notes yet. It teaches them a new more advanced fingering pattern

Thank you for doing these awesome videos. Just got a piano last month and I've been enjoying your lessons. It's been very helpful.

in my opinion it can be more helpful to practice shorter periods but multiple times a day if you're feeling burnt out, but I typically practice a couple of hours every day.

Man, you've come such a long way since your early videos and I appreciate all of them ... keep up the great work! Now for my question; what's the difference between 'sight reading practice' and 'piano piece practice' in the routine you outlined?
