Summons are probably my favorite aspect of FF. Just these cool creatures that usually are ridiculously strong and often require sidequests to get the best ones, or alternatively huge threats that are essentially gods like in FF XIV.

Its probably why my favorite FF games are the ones where summons are an integral part of the plot.

I remember renting this VHS tape from Blockbuster that was basically an FFVII strategy guide on video that actually showed footage of what you had to do. I tried to dig up that video in recent years but it's basically lost media at this point. It was with the help of that tape that I was able to breed a gold chocobo and acquire Knights of the Round.

EDIT: AN ABSOLUTE HERO FOUND THE TAPE IN QUESTION ON YOUTUBE. IT WAS HERE ALL ALONG!

Talking about 7 summons I do wonder how the remake series will handle Bahamut and the knights of the round when they get to them. That said great video FFU.

What makes Ifrit from XVI special is he's not the traditional Ifrit of the older games but the true form of an actual god.

"First we're gonna catch 2 good or great Chocobos.
Then we're gonna spend our life savings on greens to speed them up.
Next, we're gonna race them to better our odds of breeding a Special Chocobo.
Now, we gotta steal some Carbo Nuts.
Next, we're gonna mate them to get a Blue or Green Chocobo.
Then we gotta race THIS Chocobo.
Now we gotta fight some battles to give our Chocobos time to recover.
Then we're gonna breed the Chocobos again, and keep resetting the game until we get the one that's the other color that we don't have, AND the opposite gender.
Now we gotta race THIS Chocobo.
Next, we gotta fight some more battles so our newborn Chocobos can grow up.
*Now we're gonna force brother and sister to perform the act of I****t*.
Next, we gotta race THIS Chocobo.
And now we gotta fight some more battles so that THIS Chocobo can grow up.
Now we gotta catch a Wonderful Chocobo.
Then we're gonna steal a Zeio Nut.
And now we're gonna mate the Wonderful Chocobo with our Black Chocobo, and now we finally have our Gold Chocobo.

So yeah, that's pretty much everything in a nutshell."

The damage that Ifrit puts out in FF16 is so ridiculous I love it. Literally makes you feel like a god.

The Magnus sisters are amazing. They might have less damage than Anima on their final attack on their attack but they are better without overdrives

I like your timeline approach since honestly I think raw numbers wouldn't be really helpful since every game scales at least a little differently

Lol I like how its mentioned that KotR ignored magic defense, EVERYTHING in that game ignored magic defense.

I can't believe you wouldn't mention our lord and savior, Whyt. Or his equally powerful god-tier brethren, Eggman.

That said, this is what charmed me about FF as a whole. Rydia was so got-dang badass, slinging both Black Magic and these powerful AoE monsters that do immense damage, and only she could do them! It's what sold me on the series.

Anima and Magus Sisters and Valefor deserves more and what i mean is they deserve to be in other FF games😔😔😔

Love how most people vouch for Yojimbo, completely ignoring that in fact… Odin had his ability before he ever been born O_o

- I remember FFVIII Odin, randomly killing everything in fights without you ever asking for help.
The way Gilgamesh slashes him though, duuuuhh

- If we were talking about « visual strength » Alexander from FFIX is pretty busted too, yeah we didn’t get to actually « summon him » yet he could insta effortlessly defeat the best of the best.
Alexander from Type-0 also did pretty damn amazing damage O_o
But I guess the ones you don’t « control » don’t count then ?

- Knights of the Round x4 mime was soooo cheaty, and gave you so much free time to almost watch a film meanwhile

- Magus Sisters and Yojimbo were also pretty strong yep, yet their damage and fighting behavior was kinda random and they could mess things up too…
Anima had reliable damage and I think if I remember correctly he had some kind of « piercing » damage ability nah ?

- FFXV’s summons are rather busted too, most of the ennemies would insta die from summoning one - or at least they would take substantial damage 😓

My favorite summon is when IRS appears out of nowhere and takes all my money away without even doing anything

Anima and Bahamut Zero (from FFVII OG) are my favorite summons to date.

Just wanted to let you know that Yojimbos Zanmato in FFX actually DOES have damage numbers associated with it, they just aren't seen normally.

Zeromus summon was absolutely necessary for the final trial in trial mode.
