What makes this scene even more touching is the fact the Japanese actors for Snake and Big Boss were actually father and son who were estranged at the time. Kojima intentionally chose the actor who played Big Boss to get them to reconcile, which they eventually did.

Here you can clearly see, how much pain did Big Boss live through and how did it change him in every way. Snake is realy like a child compared to him. BB knows what it is to spend all your life in hatred and battle and so he says - it's time to put aside the gun and live. Everyone dies Snake. Petition to start putting this on some next gen consoles for the love of god...I still remember over 10 years ago, my friend bringing his PS3 over to play it, swapping when one of us died or he got a phone call from his gf (I ended up playing most of the game, including beating it because of this, because socially I was a loser). He ran out of money and couldn't rent it again at Movie Gallery, so I paid for another week as long as he promised to beat it at my house. Dude was in tears when (SPOILERS) Raiden's son comes up to him at the end. It's hilarious to me now. He had just come back inside from calling his girlfriend and I was like "its done man", he cried, and we watched a two hour long cut scene that he barely had any context for. But mostly I just remember that dude crying.

Big Boss in Peace Walker ending 1, after originally believing The Boss betrayed herself as a soldier due to Dr. Strangelove's speech, said that he will never drop his gun as long as he lives.

Decades later, after realizing The Boss intent, he dropped his gun, and helped Snake do the same.

What is trying to be portrayed here is that Big Boss is commemorating what THE Boss wanted. Not to change, not to fight for country or borders. But to live together as humans and forget war. This group of humans weren't supposed to fight... They were supposed to live. However Big Boss forgot that due to the anger inside him and sadness. It wasn't about loyalty anymore it was about dedication to a cause that wasn't even meant to be fought for. Big Boss will live on in our hearts forever.
