Every summer brings with it sunshine, and more SPF myths than you ever asked for. Here's a breakdown of my top 7 sunscreen myths.
Let me know which myths I've missed in the comments!

Myths covered:
* SPF 30 and SPF 50 aren't that different
* DIY sunscreen is effective
* Sunscreen is bad for your health
* Chemical sunscreen needs to be applied to bare skin
* SPF-rated makeup gives good protection
* Layering products with SPF doesn't work
* You only need to reapply sunscreen if you've been in the sun

A couple of very good open-access references:

What other sunscreen myths do you see way too often? Or is there something you think might be a myth but you're not quite sure? Let me know!

You forgot to mention that having dark skin doesn’t mean you can’t get skin cancer. I’ve seen comments on other channels, where some people are convinced that they don’t need sunscreen because they’re darker. Btw, thank you for this! It’s sorely needed! You’re my chem nerd hero! 💖 😆

My favorite or least favorite myth is that you don't need to apply sunscreen when it's cloudy. The truth is, clouds don't really block all the UVA or UVB rays, so our skin still absorbs UV rays and gets damaged. Most people where I live think that I'm dumb for applying sunscreen when there's no sun lol.

I honestly admire you, all the time and energy you put into research

Favourite myth: "Oh, I don't burn, I tan, so I don't need sunscreen. "

Amazing video as always! So, someone left a comment on one of my videos saying that he ‘read a study’ that said we shouldn’t be using chemical sunscreens because they trap heat and raises the body temperature leading to ‘thermal stress’ in our bodies. Is this even remotely true? Did this ‘fact’ get a bit lost in translation?! I’m sure you’ve mentioned before that it raises the body temperature a minuscule amount so not sure what ‘study’ he was referring to 🙃🌞

You should have more subs.
You present your content really well, are likeable, real, articulate and have a great sense of humour.
I love how your videos are to the point, factual and not full of rambling, fakeness or trying to sell things to your viewers.
I enjoy watching you and enjoy your content. Hopefully your channel will blow up xx

Thank you for explaining the spf levels. I use SPF100 and people constantly tell me I should just use 30 or 50. I burn if I use 30 or 50 but I don't burn when I use 100 so I'll stick to the 100.

Lady, you are out here saving lives (and our skin)! Just discovered your channel from James Welsh's channel (who I also just recently discovered too). I love how you break things down easily for us mere mortals. Glad I could get valuable information from someone who actually understands the science behind skincare and makeup.

My biggest pet peeve is when “YouTubers” just put on foundation with spf and call it a day. 🙄

Myth: A THIN layer of sunscreen will protect your skin! I see it time and time again with people showing their morning routines 😖

I've never heard of a channel that is professional at sunscreen. I have a passion for sunscreen but I've been looking for that channel for years. Thanks a lot, finally I've found it. This is the only one channel that satisfies me. Thank you.

My favourite myth is "dark skinned people don't need sunscreen because we have melanin". Uhm, melanocytes are easily triggered by UV and that is why dark skinned folks are more prone to hyperpigmentation. I can't stress this enough. People think I am crazy because it has been my habit to apply sunscreen every morning.

I need to show this to my mom, she believes sunscreen is the reason for skin cancer and not sunshine...

I like the fact that you are actually qualified to dispel these beauty myths. There is so much misinformation on the internet. I’m guilty of believing myth #1, so will be looking to purchase spf 50 + from now on 👍

My favourite " I have been using my DIY sunscreen for years and never got burn, this proves my DIY sunscreen works!"
I just want to say, look at your sunspots and fine lines, and you are younger than me.
