The port city of Adulis is one of the ancient African cities that was established during the time of the Aksumite Kingdom (100AD to 940AD) in Eritrea. Adulis was situated in Zula Gulf along the Red Sea, and approximately 25miles from Massawa. Adulis was one of Aksumite kingdom’s metropolitan cities. The control of this port allowed the Aksumite kingdom to be a leading power in the Red Sea. The ruins of Adulis are found in the present-day city of Zula.
