This is why I love the new “cringe but free” Attitude. More teenagers need to be weird little freaks and not bully other weird teenage freaks (or themselves) about it.

I run 3 different goth clubs, I DJ, and I’ve been in 2 goth bands. And I STILL get this kind of treatment. Its not about you. Its about them never feeling good enough and projecting it onto you.
Only people who constantly criticize themselves criticize others. Its how they taught their own brains to operate.

I don't get it. Alternative people are literally all about fighting for their self expression yet hate on people who are…expressing themselves?

this almost feels like those “curly hair” gatekeepers who say that if you scrunch your hair even slightly or use any kind of product you don’t actually have curly hair when they aren’t even curly

Another thing about the more "cutesy" 2020s alt fashion is that it seems to be influenced strongly by things like Japanese Harajuku fashion! Which is also an established alternative style created as a form of protest against following fashion trends and the pressure to fit the norm. Sound familiar? Just because it's bright or cutesy doesn't mean it can't be alt. Intent matters!

“We had mosh pits, you have safe spaces!”

Me, a 24 year old that at 16 was sleeping in shitty vans, train hopping, and along with several deep bruises and bloody noses, once dislocated her knee in a mosh pit and dragged herself out on her hands and knees: Yeah, sure, lady. Tell me more how I’m a delicate snowflake for *checks notes * having empathy for people that have trauma and/or have different immutable characteristics than me. Sure.

honestly the ‘alternative’ style/s has really lost its meaning. when the famous styles that were going around the 2000s/2010s (suchas emo, scene, punk, etc.) i mean literally there were so many people that had SUCH a problem. and it still is nowadays! especially because of TikTok and media. i feel like whenever you come out as any type of style alternative or not, there will always be someone criticizing and thinking “oh you dont look __” or “you dont seem like that” as a scene kid who currently does not have many scene clothes (cause my mom does not approve of the style and im not sure where to find scene clothing) whenever someone around my school asks if im emo/scene and i respond yea, they’re like “but you dont look scene.” anyway, this video is literally 100% right on the problems with alternative style nowadays. love ur vidz!! <3

I’m a pastel goth and I’ve liked darker aesthetics since 2015. It honesty feels like a slap in the face being invalidated by kids who found out what “alt” meant like a month ago. Their delivery is always deeply condescending, and what makes it worse is that it’s obvious they don’t know what they’re talking about.

real talk im a female guitarist and tired of the alt community on tiktok. shitting on universally loved bands if they’re trending, the obsession with subcultures. like why do they care so much, literally the least alt attitude you could have. the only standard IMO is rejecting racism, homophobia, transphobia, discrimination in any sense. we are meant to be the community of underdogs and black sheep who have eachothers backs LOVE THIS

I've noticed that it's usually 15-17yo teens who have just gotten over their "cringe" phase (not actual cringe, they were just being normal kids trying to figure out their interests) tend to be mean and nitpicky towards slightly younger teenagers who are just getting into the alt scene, and are following popular alt trends as a way to get into the subculture(s).

It's like they're projecting their feelings of past cringe towards these younger teens to make them skip such an important stage of personal interest development, and it's so sad. I think it's why you see so many younger kids desperate to grow up faster, because they get called cringe and childish by slightly older teenagers.

You can see this exact thing with that current tiktok trend of teens showing their 2020/2021 aesthetic vs their 2023 aesthetic usually with the caption "I healed" or "I hate who I was before". It's just sad.

These people are so obsessed with the looks that they completely forgot what being alternative is actually ABOUT.

I have a friend of a friend who calls me "barcode" instead of my name and says im his "pet emo" he also has made multiple disgusting sh jokes towards me. I'm not even emo! I wear my favorite oversized black jacket to school that's it! (I wear it because it comforts me, being around people and loud noises makes me anxious) There is so much bad stigma around people who dress "emo" or "alternative". His comments make me super uncomfortable and I hate it so much, so whenever he calls me that I throw him a middle finger and call him a cvnt. Lol
have a good day and stay safe and healthy!

Crazy how alt style started as a protest against the norm. Hence the name ‘alternative’. It got started as a freedom of expression of music and style, & yet when people freely express themselves, they’re bullied. Like it’s idiotic, man. I was an emo teen during the MySpace days and going through that was bad enough, because of the amount of judgement and bullying. Everyone back in those days were calling everyone else poseurs. It was ridiculous, man. The expansion of social media has made it much worse, giving everyone a sense of entitlement to judge who passes as an emo or goth or whatever alt they are. No one is allowed to give anyone else a pass. Cause that’s not how alt style works. Alternative style doesn’t have an exp date! That’s one of the perks of being alt. Being alt means not fitting the norms.’ Which means not fitting trends which means nothing expires. People are weird on the internet dude. :/

As a fledgling Emo who has only two articles of black clothing and only a handful of songs from a handful of bands (mostly from the 2000s) I really love and appreciate this video. It’s quite terrifying for me to associate with alt culture because I feel like I’m “late” or a “faker” when really I’m still experimenting and growing as a teen.
