It's a good idea to at least wear knee pads whenever you go mountain biking, and always wear a helmet! But we see a lot of riders making protection mistakes when it comes to it, here are a few of the most common we have seen out on the trails 🤘

Always wear you pads underneath your clothing, make sure it is the right size and fits correctly, use the appropriate protection for the trails that you are riding, and going overkill is under rated!

Have you made any of these mistakes?

Why are gloves left out? In almost any fall you're going to use your hands to protect you body, meaning they're going to take a rough hit. I always wear helmet and gloves, this is non negotiable. Knee pads and elbow pads when doing trails and a full face helmet if I expect some gnarly trails (which at my current level means that I almost always wear it 😀 ).

I recently had an XC race on a trail that I never rode before. I debated whether to wear knee and elbow pads since the terrain was very rocky and sharp. I'm so glad I did because 1 hour and 15 minutes in, I slid out going 20 mph on a turn. If it weren't for the protection, I most definitely would have needed a hospital visit. Even with the protection, the wounds took 1.5 weeks to heal but they were very minor compared to what could have happened without protection.

First time I wore elbow pads a friend gave them to me when we turned up to the bike park. I just slide them on over the top of my jersey. Had a big fall and the jersey pinned between my elbow and pads just gave me the worst friction burn across my whole elbow that took weeks to heal due to it splitting everytime I bent my arm. Lesson learnt. They always go under your clothes lol

I find the general disregard of hardshell knee-shin combos disturbing. Yes they seem bulky and often look oversized. But fashion aside - I've really tried everything over the decades, and have not found anything that fades so easily into forgettness like those. Since they are held up by your calf, they don't need to be as tight and still never slip. This not only makes the much airier, but also it eradicates the pinch abrasions on the back of the knee.
And last but not least - it's never bad to have some shin protection!

Try it!

I made the mistake of not wearing protection last week. I lost one of my knee pads when I moved and didn’t get a new set when I crashed into a small Boulder and went over the bars. Got a new set the next day but will probably be Atleast another week till I’m closer to pre flip over health

Can I wear good groin protector cup, the same used for baseball and hokey, or Wich brand is recommended for best protection against impacts or prevent injuries?. Can I use shorter nose saddle, like specialized power for downhill or enduro?

I've only got one argument for the pads under your clothing. I have MX pads I use on occasion with pants, they're too big to go inside the pantleg lol

I DH, using old skool HARDKNOX shin/knee & elbow/forearm, if I could post a picture, you would see the benefits of wearing pads. On my right leg pad, I hit slate and sliced though the plastic protector, if I didn't have the pads on, I think I wouldn't be riding now...
