Imagine being in the industry almost 30 years and at age 46 finally getting the proper recognition for her immense talents. She is so deserving but it has taken far too long.

In some ways, this song perfectly encapsulates Nicole’s return to the spotlight.

You guys.. her performance is a transcendent experience. I’ve never witnessed anything like it in theatre. People in the audience all around me had their hands on their chest and mouths wide open. People wept. It was amazing.

I have heard and seen her do this over 6 times now and she nails it exactly like this every time. The cast is powerful. It's a reimagining of the musical, open your senses. And remember, women over 40 in this business are cast aside even to this day!!

I was in London a year ago and saw that a new production of Sunset Boulevard had just opened at the West End. I had seen the original Broadway production of the show with Glenn Close in the mid-90's and was blown away by her performance. I bought tickets to the new West End show with Nicole Scherzinger in the role of Norma, and arrived at the Savoy Theater with much skepticism. The publicity poster outside the theater showed Ms. Scherzinger neither in the costume or make up of Glenn Close's Norma. Once the show started, I did not know quite what to make of the minimalist set and the casts' street wardrobe. I was expecting the same over-the-top set and costumes of the 90's show. But after 10 minutes, I forgot about the original production. I was mesmerized by Ms. Scherzinger’s performance. I saw the new production again, on Broadway, earlier this month, when it was still in previews, . Beyond the very obvious differences with the set and costumes, the biggest difference was how I felt for the character of Norma Desmond. Ms. Close was excellent, but in that original production, what I felt for “Norma” was simple sympathy, and only that. For this latest version of Sunset and Ms. Scherzinger’s performance, I felt empathy for “Norma”. Here’s why: Ms. Scherzinger’s Norma is attractive and is not at all a has-been, except for her chronological age. In the new production, the contrast of “old Norma” (Ms. Scherzinger) and “young Norma” (a young look-alike actress who comes in and out of the scenes to remind old Norma of her young self, Jamie Lloyd's addition to this production that was not in the original production) makes that point. So when old Norma is rejected by Mr. DeMille, the character of Joe Gillis, and the rest of Hollywood, we, the audience feel her pain the way that we did not for 1990's Norma. We do not understand the rejection and is puzzled by it because we could see that Ms. Scherzinger, as old Norma and despite her chronological age, is still as gorgeous and attractive as the young Norma. That is the biggest difference between the original 90's production and Jamie Lloyd’s production, and why this new production, without the elaborate set and costumes, is much better. Ms. Scherzinger, in the role of Norma, made us feel the rejection as if it was us being rejected, and how unfair and unjust it was.

I have been to so many musical performances in my life. But this was the best I have ever seen. Nicole Scherzinger is out of this world. Still after a year having seen it London this show captivates me so much! Lucky Broadway audiences!

Wow. I saw this in the 90s with Betty Buckley and I admit I was skeptical about Nicole in this role. But wow. That was amazing. 😊
