Hungry Fan Insulated Thermal Cooking Bag - Unboxing & Testing

Fuel prices in Nigeria are rising daily, and cooking is a really essential thing here*. A kind viewer sent me this insulated bag that is designed for cooking or keeping food hot, without additional fuel. But does it work?

*Nearly all Nigerian food and recipes are cooked (salads are not really a thing here) - partly because of culture and tradition, but partly also because of hygiene and the scarcity of refrigeration.

This style of cooking was popular in america during the great depression as well, when most people became very poor.

Though instead of a commercially sold bag, they used what is called a hay box. It was a box or wooden crate filled with hay or dried grasses as insulation or fabric like towels, rags and blankets so you could bring your food to a boil in the pot, put it into the box with the lid, cover it with more insulation and close the box.

Used 'Hay boxes' for years. They work well once you understand how to use them. Also 'Flask cooking' is well worth getting into. We use it a lot in hotels for making porridge instead of paying silly prices for a breakfast or when we are camping.

How fantastic! I have one which I use for rice, lentils and veg. I wrap the pot in a cloth first to save the wonderbag from food splashes. Then I can go and have a bath for an hour or two and not worry about leaving the gas on 😁 it stays really hot for hours, too hot to touch with bare hands.

Super interesting! If you ever try with beans, that would be interesting to watch as well!

Great way of getting a bit more out of fuel used, and hopefully saves you money in the long run.

Great to see how excited you are about the Wonder Bag, and how useful it is to you! It looks like it's made from the same kind of insulated material as warm winter coats here in Europe, which I'm pretty sure you don't need over there in Nigeria.

There was a factory making things like that; "Koklådor". They made the boxes to save on firewood in the early 19-hundreds. I have one, thanks to my brother :-)

This is so cool! And it’s portable too so you could use this item to keep a pot of food warm to take to a party or function to share with friends and family, there would be no reheating required :) this is a great invention ^_^

Aromipesa.

(It was a styrox product on finnish tv-shop for same principle. Everyone old enough knows it because everyone watched tv-shop in 90s as there were times there was literally nothing else on)

This is excellent and I think it could, and should be used the world over. It cooks as well as an electric slow-cooker without using any energy once the food has come to the boil. Better for the environment and better for people's budget. I'll be keeping my eye out for one if and when they become available in Australia

What a brilliant idea and bravo to Cat! Will it keep things cold for longer too without using the fridge?

Conserving the energy in the pan(pot?) like that reminds me of when I used to go camping with my family.
Digging a hole in the ground, and burying the (Very) hot rocks with a leg(s) of lamb/beef/venison, - Would take longer to cook, for sure.
but a great way to save the heat energy in the rocks.

I would love to see you make a video on food costs and inflation in Nigeria. How are regular people impacted?
