My KIA soul 2010 1.6L gamma base model 5 speed just started doing this too at 48, 000 miles. I had the timing chain and tensioner plus guides changed and it still does it. It sounds like a valve / camshaft issue. After the engine warms up its barely noticeable but still annoying. I took it to KIA and was told its normal, How can a sound that wasn't there for the first 48, 000 miles be normal now. KIA dealers are so irresponsible, the funny thing is then they wonder why the cars reputation and resale is so poor.

I did open engine properly, didn't found anything but worn piston oil rings and slightly ellipsis cylinders. I put new bearings, piston rings, timing chain and tensioner, spark plugs, checked valve clearances, camshafts, valves, cylinder head, opened CVVT acuarator and operating valve and nothing found. Put everything back and same noise keeps going. No fault codes in memory. Now after 25 000 km later noise is same ??

When i disconnect battery for long time and first start after that, engine runs much smoother and doesn't make that knocking sound, after second start up engine runs with "harder" normal sound and makes that knocking sound again. I think it has something to do with ignition timing or knock-sensor

This is valve lifters noise. I had same my Kia Ceed SW 1.6 petrol 2012 year 126 tkm driven . It can wearn little bit camshaft because some valve lifter has little gap.
I have driven by noised 10 000 km and no more symptones.
You can not adjust valve lifters, you must change that has gap and maybe camshaft too. U must mark all lifters and valves otherwise more problems.

Sounds like the timing, did you figure it out?

Did you guys ever found out ? I had low oil and kinda old, my thought was that the oil is low quality and low level and the tensioners dont get enough power for the chain
I did an oil change with Mobil super 3000, and it still does the same at cold starts, ive noticed an exhaust leak under my car at cold starts wheere water drops when i start the engine and goes away after 5 min, same as the rattle noise .
It sounds like a cam misfiring but i dont get vibration., power loss or lights .
Maybe it could be the sound from the exhaust leaks?

Your camshaft is damaged from heat damage and debris blocking flow of oil. My 2012 ceed has the same issue, just had it checked by Kia, new engine needed...
