Asia, in answer to your question, in the studio recording of the debut album (from which this song comes), the multi-talented Tom Scholz plays all the instruments except drums (and vocals, which is the late, great Brad Delp). So the keyboardist is also Tom Scholz.

I just turned 50, and I have been a musician for at least 40 of those years. What do I think of this solo? I think it is the single finest studio recorded moment in the history of rock guitar. I would put the last 2 minutes of this song up against anything ever recorded on the electric guitar. I have listened to this song thousands and thousands of times since 1976, and that outro solo completely slays me every time, like I never heard it before. It is a masterpiece.

By the way, as others have said, that's Tom Scholz on all guitars AND the organ. For a man who influenced the sound of rock guitar for the next forty years, it's hilarious that he thinks of himself as "a keyboardist who also plays some guitar." Oh, and that part near the end of the organ solo where the pitch bends up? That wasn't a synthesizer - that was a Hammond organ in a wood cabinet just like the one at church or Grandma's house, so no pitch bend - he got that sound by literally pushing on the tape with his finger and slowing it down, so that when you hear it on the record, you get the opposite effect of the sound speeding up slightly and raising the pitch.

No click track, no Pro tools, no auto-tune, no tricks. Everything you hear on this record and others like it from back in the day, human beings did in real time, really sounding that good, and simply put it to tape.

Tom Scholz plays all guitar parts, all keyboard parts, and bass parts. He recorded this in his basement before people were recording at home. An Engineer who graduated MIT, dude is a genius.

This may be one of the greatest entire albums ever pressed. It's one of those albums you play from start to finish.

I loved cranking up Boston back in ‘86 in high school in my Monte Carlo. It was hard to not speed listening to this ! 💯

As was previous stated, Tom Scholz is the band Boston. He played all the instruments. He also wrote most of the songs, he was the sound engineer, the recording engineer, the mixer. He also invented the pedal system for the guitars to make them distinct from any other guitar in the world. He recorded this album in his basement with used, borrowed and invented equipment. He played the acoustic guitar, 12 string guitar, electric rhythm guitar, bass guitar, keyboards and even the drums but the drums were later redone at the insistence of the record label. His friend Brad Delp did all the vocals, including backup and harmonizing. Brad also wrote the final song added to the album. Tom is an MIT engineer and would be wealthy without doing music. This album for almost 50 years was the best and most sold debut album of all time. The guitar solo you loved was using the pedal system which allowed him to play the guitar in so many different tones. Every modern guitar or bass player uses the system he invented and debuted on this album. Every song on this album is a gem. When this came out, every song was getting air time on the radio. But no cover bands could do Boston songs because Tom was the only one with the pedal system that contained the tones he used. Thanks for sharing and great reaction. Chris

This is my favorite song on the album. And that guitar solo at the end is exquisite. This is a perfect feel good 70s classic rock song. The soundtrack of my youth. Much love to you guys. 😎💕❤

Being from Mass and going to UMASS/Amherst college 77-81 this was a God like band that actually delivery grace and timeless talent. Still remember being in a Chevy van in HS in 77 with a cloud of smoke in the winter listening to Smoking and this entire album!

The solo is off the chain, but it's actually a duet, if not quite a duel. They are playing in harmony incredibly fast at a couple of points. The solo is legendary.

I was born in 1970 . My big brother had this car it was a fire bird . He was 6 years older than me and he would sometimes take me for a ride is his chick magnet cruising the streets car. Boston was one of the (8 track tapes) he had to play . My first record I bought was Aldo Nova. I didn’t have a car but I would blast the song Fantasy and others on mom and dads record player . He introduced me to AC/DC Boston and many others . Thanks if you get to see this . It was a huge influence on me Boston and those others. You guys rock !! Keep on doing what you are doing . It means a lot to me to be a part of your family!!

Keyboardist is Tom Scholz, who created Boston in his basement. Also lead guitarist. Legend. INVENTED the equipment he uses.

Love Boston! A good solo takes you away. I think that's the " gift" in the solo besides listening to the instruments, the listener always leaves the solo holding something. That something is different for each individual but good collectively.
