Why is pneumonia so dangerous? - Eve Gaus and Vanessa Ruiz

Explore how pneumonia attacks the tiny air sacs in your lungs and how your immune system works to fight off the infection.

--

Every time you breathe, air travels down the trachea, through a series of channels, and then reaches little clusters of air sacs in the lungs. These tiny sacs facilitate a crucial exchange: allowing oxygen from the air we breathe into the bloodstream and clearing out carbon dioxide. Pneumonia wreaks havoc on this exchange system. Eve Gaus and Vanessa Ruiz detail how pneumonia attacks the lungs.

My grandma just passed away from pneumonia last Monday. 🙁 Her body went into shock and started shutting down. Couldn't say goodbye bc of covid protocol. She was a great lady. Love you forever Grandma.

I had pneumonia when I was 8 yrs old, I still remember the intense pain and difficulty while trying to breathe. It was the most painful and horrible thing I have ever felt. My condition was so bad that I had to stay a 8 days in the hospital with 2 tubes coming out of the side of my ribcage to drain out the fluid in my lungs. It was horrible

EDIT: wow I didn’t realize I have almost 1k comments a year later😮🤯

My dad had pneumonia when I was either in middle school or high school. I was definitely younger than I am now. He was sick for a month & my mom took him to the hospital where he was diagnosed with it & spent a week in the ER. During that time, my grandmother stayed at our apartment to watch my brother & I, making sure we got up for school, while my mom stayed at the hospital with my dad while he was recovering. The whole time I, along with my brother, grandmother & mom prayed to God every day & every night, begging him to not take him away from us. He answered our prays & helped my father recover. He was finally discharged after a week & we were all so happy to have him back home. He was still a bit sick, but all he needed was bed rest & medicine from the doctor. He's healthy now & isn't sick anymore. I'm also 20 & I thank God everyday for helping my father recover. He is a very loving husband to my mom & loving father to me & my brother.

My mom had double pneumonia because of Covid. Let me tell you, she almost died and was in the hospital for 7 days. She couldn’t even breathe correctly and was having so much difficulty. The anxiety I felt that week was so horrible and incomparable to anything I’ve ever felt. I’m so grateful that she survived and I am so sorry to the people who lost their loved ones due to it. 💕

Had pneumonia when I was about 9 and I can attest, it really feels like you’re dying. I was fine at the beginning of the day, but as it progressed I kept coughing more and more. I went to bed thinking nothing of it because i had been outside all day and it had been really dry. My sister woke me up and was crying, telling me I was barely breathing which scared the life out of me because I really was barely breathing! I got antibiotics and was fine but you never really forget the feeling of that rattle in your chest. I don’t wish that on anybody 🤮

Now I fully understand why when I had pneumonia is was soooo painful.
Couldn’t lay down because of the pain; couldn’t stand up for long because I was breathless.
Days became a blur.
Took days, and multiple trips to the hospital, to get a diagnosis.

If you've ever had pneumonia you'd know why! I've had it several times. Once so bad I was truly afraid to fall asleep out of fear of never waking up! It is absolutely no fun!

I had pneumonia last year, and let me tell you, I went to the hospital plenty of times. I once had a nose bleed, threw up, and had pneumonia all at the same time, and I felt like I was gonna pass out. Stay safe everyone, and please protect yourself 💕

A sign for pneunomia is also that when you breath out it makes a strange kind of rattle. And your chest hurts and you can't breathe properly.
