Welp, I've been into the rabbithole of how internet works because of this clip. It's kinda baffling how all of it works because we put wires in the ocean between continents. Wtf.

The actual explanation: The Internet is a "network of networks", a lot of individual networks connected with each other. Each network can use a different transmission technology. A router is the device that can communicate with two networks at the same time and transmit data between them. There are defined standards (protocols) for how each of the various transmission technologies work. Everything starts out as a simple thing like how to construct a suitable cable, or what electric signal patterns mean what, and then those are used as building blocks to make more complex systems. It's all layers on top of layers of complexity, and while it's possible to understand some of the parts, having a complete working knowledge of all the parts is basically impossible for a single person.
