How to Prime Miniatures with a Brush

In this video, I show you how I prime miniatures with a paint brush. I prefer using brush on primer when the model is small, or when spraying isn't possible or necessary.

Using a brush on primer, like Vallejo Surface Primer, is great for quickly starting a project. With a soft "mop" brush, like cosmetic brushes, you can cover large areas without making a mess. Using a dabbing motion with short brushstrokes helps prevent primer from pooling and forming bubbles, as well as enures the primer gets into every nook and cranny.

Here's what I used in video for priming this model:

Short to the point and with no padding front or back, the PERFECT instructional video.

Omg this helps! I wish I could use airbrush but can’t always go outside lol. It’s my first time painting figures and I wanted to go the easy route for primer lol

Damn. This is such a quick and to the point video. I can't tell you how great it is to see this. I've been struggling with priming my minatures before painting. I know it's the best way to do so but I can't afford the space and money for an airbrush setup. Brush is the way. Thank you for the brief and simple demonstration!

Thanks for this. I'm about to prime some models for the 1st time and your video helped bunches :)

This seems way easier than spraying. I used a spray for a mini and it came out super clumpy - after I had shaken it for a good 5 minutes. This just makes more sense. Thanks for the uplaod

I've heard ppl say it's a lot easier to accidentally cover up details too much this way. But looks good to me!

I feel like no one ever mentions brush priming as an alternative to rattle can or airbrush lol. I have a bunch of 1/64 scale miniatures waiting to be primed because it's too cold outside, but i will try brush primer and see how it goes. thanks for the video!

Thanks for the video. I keep getting bubbles and bad looking brush stroke lines on mine. Not to mention a lot of details are muddied. Any tips? Also how long do you wait from first coat to second?

thanks for this, airbrushing isnt an option for me really because I live upstairs amd it would be inconvenient to go downstairs just to spray outside lmao

Thank you! This is very shareable, and I hadn't seen that type of brush recommended yet for the process.
How soon after a good treatment with the hair-dryer do you start applying paint though? I was previously giving my vallejo surface primer a good 48+ hrs just air drying, which... is a lot of patience 💀

Which is the best primer? The speedpaint primer, Citadel, Vallejo or others?

hey Tangible,
just want to know if you need to put on the mask when you paint with paint brush?

Hi. I wish I found this reassurance/video a year ago. Do you let those bubbles just sit and dry or do you try to poke at them/flatten them out after your first coat?

Is it normal to have a lot of bubbles when you paint primer with a brush. I use the white Vallejo Surface Primer and it has a lot of bubbles.

what size of this brush, that you are using?

Would this primer also work great on flat plastic pieces such as plastic model cars or Lego pieces ?
