with smart working it could work if the internet infrastructure is good. but understand these homes are usually out of the way and the renovation will be costly. but if you can afford that, it can be a good investment!

The UK does something similar. After mining and heavy industry mainly closed down in the north the housing areas that relied on them started to decline and in some areas the local governments were offering the houses for 1 pound, but with a requirement to renovate

I heard about it and if somebody has a dream buying an old house in Italy, it could be perfect. In Czechia a friend of mine bought a small castle for cheap, something like 120000 Euro. Thing is the renovation is going to cost at least ten times that. Unless you'd be fine paying fine (like rich often do) and ruining the near-ruin even further, you need to follow some rules and with large buildings it often turns into a community project.

It's the same with all historic buildings (everywhere in EU): archaeologic research, have the accredited workers restore the original facade, paint inside, floorings... use the authentic window frames and so on.

All British pensioners must retire in Italy. Leave all the homes to young Brits.

Its not the cheapest homes there that are interesting, its the ones that auction for 10 to 50K. People that buy those tend to be happy with their purchase.

If there are jobs available, this will be an overnight success

It's amazing for digital nomads! You can live on 500 euroes per month, and you can own a home for like 40k. That's amazing. It's just that living in a small (probably religious, and not diverse) village isn't particularly attractive, however with amazing food and weather, it might work!

This is awesome, but it needs good internet and good public transit to cuties (a close HSR station by car to Rome for example) with that you can atract people with 2-3 days of homeworking, and there are a lot of them. Here is the impotance of public transport in villages
