Plant employees had to be sent to dive in nuclear contaminated water to stop water tanks from filling up. This enabled the water tanks at the plant to be emptied. If this wasn't done the cesium would have reacted with the water in the tanks and resulted in a huge bomb due to a thermal reaction with the water and instant vaporization of the water.

I’m not sure how they stood up so easily with their massive steel balls weighing them down.

This is why Valery later in the series says Boris mattered the most.
Valery knew his way around science and facts.
You need someone like him to make sure what needs to be done.
Boris knew his way around words and people.
You need someone like him to make sure it actually gets done.

For real though these three guys saved Eastern Europe. Huge respect.

The fact these guys volunteered to do it while believing it would kill them just gives me chills when each one stands up.

Alexei Ananenko and Valery Bespalov are still alive to this day. Boris Baranov died in 2005 of a heart attack, he was 64 years old.

Most people’s thought that back then the saying was “do or die”, when in fact it was “die, but do.”

Best “sacrifice” speech i’ve ever seen!

Keep in mind that of all the people who were the closest to the disaster, these 3 who literally waded in water that would make exposed flesh blister and decay within weeks, are amongst those who survived.

If that isn't karma for their actions, idk what is.

This is probably the best fictional speech in the history of the cinematic art.

"You'll do it because it must be done."
All around the world, there are historic examples of men and women walking straight into the arms of death to protect their people. And yet we still wage war against each other as if we have nothing in common.

Pretty sure this is what "Hero of the Soviet Union" should have been awarded for.

Amazingly well done show. This scene truly is moving, the thing I love though, after the 3 men volunteer you see for a brief moment what passes for a smile on Boris' face.

This is possibly the most compelling scene in the history of television. Stellan Skarsgards acting and vocal performance alone are as good as any acting I have ever seen in my life. Powerful POWERFUL scene. It pulls you through different emotions, from wanting to cry to feeling the great pride that old Soviet Union workers felt about themselves and their work, and its importance to the state and their people. Just a mind blowing, phenomenal scene.

"This is what has always set our people apart. 1000 years of sacrifice in our veins, and every generation must know its suffering". This, WW2, and so many other events made the Russian people what they are today, fierce yet poetic. Mad Respect

I love how Shcherbina rallies the men and admits to them that he is also in it with them because he is exposed too.
Great scene. I realize some things were dramatized but overall it's mostly true and these are the names of the brave and selfless men who SAVED EUPORE. NEVER FORGET THE SACRIFICES.
