Can Christians get tattoos? I answered this question a couple years ago, but have since changed my mind. But probably not in the way that you're thinking...

One thing I've come to realize though, is that the more popular something is with the world and the present culture, the more i should think twice about it as a christian. Also, whenever you see yourself wanting something so badly, pause. The fact is our motives are rarely selfless, there is always a reason...

I have neck tattoos but when I was born again it all changed, now if I could go back in time I would’ve never gotten them.
They do absolutely nothing for us.

I once thought about getting one but I guess it was due to cultural influences, l never felt like tattoos aligned with my personality and now that I'm a Christian I can understand why I felt that way I was called to be and act differently, now I know that my body acts as a temple for the holy spirit and I rather not scratch it with something meaningless, even if it was a bible verse or a cross what really matters is living it out not just having it written in your body.

The Bible also says not to do nothing that will make others stumble. Many people get tattoos because they are addicted to the pain. The Lord says our bodies are Temples, and we should glorify Him with them, not ourselves.

Hey good video. My wife's friend wanted to do a big friendship tattoo with her and some other friend's initials. I told her not to, because I didn't want to look at their names when I was looking at her body, and sometimes they fall out with a friend and don't hang out anymore. We haven't even seen one of them in six months, so I'm glad she didn't.

I have a small tattoo "saved by Jesus Christ Ephesians 6:10" with a small cross on my wrist. I get non Christians looking at it every day and ask me about Jesus. As an introvert, this is the best ice breaker for me and spread the gospel. My intention to get it when I did at the time was to commemorate meeting Jesus in real life and being born "above" in spirit.

I have tattoos from my younger years. Also a couple of years ago I had an artist sketch a half sleeve of my testimony and almost went through with getting it. After bringing it before the Lord i decided to use the time and money to take a hermeneutics class instead lol, looking back it was the right decision for me…coincidently i recently found myself wanting to now go ahead with the tattoo but more that likely will not. I agree with your video 👍

While I appreciate that you cite vanity as a possible objection to tattoos, I rather doubt that vanity doesn't taint the decision to get a tattoo. After all, it's a marking of your body that you'll display until the day you die. There has to be an element of pride there somewhere.

But lost in the discussions is the big one: conforming to the world, and in this case the currents of pagan culture. Even 40 years ago, tattoos were the stuff of criminals, bikers, and rock stars. What changed? The worldly desire to stand out as edgy and cool.

I almost took the bait many years ago, but Leviticus changed my mind. If that's shoddy theology, so be it. I find the convoluted pro-tattoo arguments at best unconvincing, and at worst dishonest equivocating.

All said, I love your channel and commentary. Blessings.

I have no tattoos and very likely never will have any, but I really don't see them as inherently sinful. There are certainly places and designs that can be harmful though.
I think a lot of people get a bunch of useless tattoos that have little meaning and were just done to fulfill a craving on a whim. It's really a shame. If you're gonna put something permanently on your body it should be pretty and thoughtful, and respectful.

A way to put it, I think:
-Imagine you were going to put on a necklace or wristband or something today.
-You take a look, and one of the wristbands has a note on it: "cannot be removed once you wear it."
-Do you try it on?

In a sense, that seems to be what tattoos are.

Plus, don't forget we age: it won't look the same later on in life, nor will it look as good as when first applied.

Act wisely, especially when making permanent decisions.

I have tattoos. One is a cross in the star of David and the other is some random Chinese symbol. Both I got on a whim, both are luckily tiny and hideable, and both I got before really knowing Jesus. My dad recently passed and I was thinking about getting something in honor of him but i got convicted the day of the appointment that I didn't want it but I was torn between spirit and fleshly desire. Crazy thing is that the day of the appointment the tattoo Artist had to cancel and it was a sigh of relief. No doubt God didn't want me to get that tattoo. So I've committed to not getting anymore. I also took out my nose piercings as well. God showed me they are worldly vanity and that they did nothing for me anyways. 🤷‍♀️ it's all about what conviction we get from God about it.

Devout catholic here, I have tons of tattoos and love them! Even the huge one I got when I turned 18, still looks great and is so well done. Tattoos are an art and an experience. All of mine look just as they did after getting them many years ago and I love to look back on those times in my life. Praise God for beautiful art. They also went with my industry as a I was a cosmetologist before a stay at home mom. Thank you so much for explaining this. Many Christians have told me over the years that tattoos are sinful. Even though half of mine are glorifying God and sparking conversations about Christianity with others! I love it. God Bless

You shouldn’t be misleading people just because you got tattoos and figured out a way to justify your tattoos. Our bodies is Gods temple and should not be cut or marked.

I am in agreement with you. I had always wanted a tattoo when I was younger to show my faith. My parents would not allow me to get any tattoos while living in their house. As I have gotten older and wiser (maybe not too much wiser haha), I have learned that my lifestyle is going to be a better witness than any tattoo could be. I have also looked into the history of tattoos in general, a pretty interesting video from National Geographic if anyone is interested, and it has a pretty dark history. I know I know a lot of things have a dark history, but are fine today. The Holy Spirit was just telling me to stay away from them. Besides the dark history, tattoo parlors in general aren’t the best places for Christians to be around

I take the Jeff Foxworthy approach. When I'm going to get a tattoo, it'll be a note on my arm of my wife's anniversary, birthday, and other information I need to keep track of.

From an anthropological point of view, tattoos in past human history have always been used as a sign of "belonging", whether to an animal tribe, a deity, or a gang or secret society... They also have been used as a remembering of some important life events considered as "rites of passage", so also relevant to the personal identity and the whole direction of life. Nowadays, since tattoos became fashionable, people tend to use them with esthetic purposes and more especially to enhance instinctive sexual attraction since the tattoos focus the attention of the gaze to the boby part where it is. In consideration of this, I think Christians should be aware of two very important issues before getting a tattoo: 1) what is the symbolism of the tattoo? Because some figures that look fashionable could have an esoteric or pagan meaning behind their appearance; 2) Be sure not to use it as a lust buster
