SHAKESPEARE | Henry V

A very short summary of the history of Henry V, William Shakespeare's ode to one of the great warrior kings of England. My second attempt at a video, with some kinks still remaining. Perhaps they'll be ironed out by number three!

Full of history - skewed or otherwise - this is the tale of a young and determined king, underestimated by his enemies, who takes the fight to his powerful adversary, and makes them renounce everything! It has been used to motivate an entire country in its dark hour, with Laurence Olivier creating the work that would be seeing by soldiers just having invaded France themselves, but heading on to Hitler's Germany.

In 1989, Kenneth Branagh created one of the most stirring incarnations of Henry, and since then it has fallen to Tom Hiddlestone to sedately portray the young king.

The tavern people aren’t pointless. It shows how the pointless wars between nobles affects normal people. They almost all were killed and the one that wasn’t was disenfranchised and disillusioned with the whole system.

One thing I will say is a very important detail to the story is that Henry ordered French prisoners of war to be killed, because the French went through one of the English camps and murdered all the women and children.

Ely (as in "the Bishop of Ely") is pronounced "Eel - ee" with the stress on the first syllable. It means Eel Island in old English.
