Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Disorders

What is the most common disorder of the TMJ and how do you know if your jaw is misaligned? If you suffer from frequent headaches, jaw pain, clicking jaw, and even ear ringing, you could be one of the more than 10 million Americans who suffer from TMJ disorder. TMJ disorder is defined as a problem with the muscles and joints in the face that cause these symptoms.

A TMJ dysfunction occurs when the joint that makes up the jaw is tight or restricted, either by the condylar disc (the connective tissue between the two bones that make up the joint) or the muscles that surround and move the joint, such as the masseter and temporalis. This can occur as a result of bad tongue position, breathing and swallowing habits and jaw position. A TMJ dysfunction can also cause the upper cervical joints (C1-C3) and the associated muscles to become restricted and refer pain to other areas—most commonly behind the eyes and to the jaw area.

How do you fix TMJ dysfunction? Since the symptoms of cervical instability are similar to those of other conditions, pain can worsen by whiplash injuries, stress (clenching), or merely sleeping in the wrong position. If you are looking to fix the problem, it is important to understand the cause rather than manage symptoms!

People think TMJ is becuse of teeth grinding. It's a lot more complicated than that. The face & neck muscles over fire because of weakness in the back, pelvis & legs. Many other contributing factors too.

My severe knee and back pain lasted for years. X-rays didn't show any abnormality. Tongue and jaw exercises completely fixed it.

Thank you so much for sharing this incredibly insightful video on the hidden sources of TMJ dysfunctions. As someone who has been dealing with TMJ issues, I found your explanations about the various symptoms and their connections absolutely enlightening. Your expertise as a posture specialist shines through, and I appreciate your dedication to teaching us how to address the root causes of the problem rather than just managing the symptoms.

The way you explained the role of the trigeminal nerve and its impact on the jaw was particularly fascinating. Your advice on identifying and addressing teeth clenching and practicing proper tongue posture is invaluable. I've already started implementing some of your tips, and I can already feel a positive difference.

Moreover, your emphasis on the link between jaw and body posture was eye-opening. The mention of your online certification program "Jaw and Body Connection" is intriguing, and I'll definitely be checking it out to delve deeper into these concepts.

Once again, thank you for sharing your knowledge and expertise. Your dedication to helping people like me understand and address TMJ dysfunctions is truly commendable. Looking forward to more insightful content from you!

I have it the worst you could probably have it. I have a multitude of problems from it, and sometimes i'm not even sure if it's tmj it gives me so many symptoms. The sensations/pain it gives me you'd think is not even possible. I get stiff neck, swallowing problems, machine gun ear popping when i swallow, eye pain and eye floaters more pronounced, tenderness/ gooey feeling above eyebrow, temples, and the most bizzarre is it causes me to be able to crack my neck where what feels like at the back of the head where the neck attaches to skull. Sometimes the feeling concentrates into what feels like the joint itself, but most of the time it is causing me a fullness feeling above my eyebrow where sinus is. Sometimes i really think i have some massive tumour the way it feels. The only reason i put up with it like i do is because sometimes it suddenly gives me a feeling like it has miraculously suddenly healed and getting better. Also it even reacts to food which is bizarre. I will eat a certain food, drink water, and it literally reacts to it in a way like it wants to get better. It only affects my left side ear/jaw tho. On right side it all feels wonderful!

It never used to be anywhere near this bad until one day i strained my muscle trying to reach something which gave me a sensation in the ear and ever since then it has been horrible. I would like to go to a Dr to get it treated, but most are clowns who look at me like i'm crazy and dismiss my p roblems.

Thank you very much! To everyone reading this, DO NOT clench your teeth plz... I was clenching mine every day for many hours because of stress (I never Knew about this) and now I have pain, headache and dizziness (most annoying) every single day for a year now... This had cause me anxiety and panic attacks because I tought that something bad was happening with my Health. Im exhausted.

I think the poor posture, scoliosis and stress caused me that problem over the time, who knows...

I stretch every day and do some jaw exercises and sometimes its help a lot.

Sorry for my english (i'm french)
There will be better days, stay strong❤!!

Wow, I had such bad TMJ 55 years ago that my jaw locked shut when I bent over and eventually stayed that way. Luckily my uncle was a renowned dentist affiliated with a top university who had developed a method to cure TMJ without surgery (at the time that was quite something). He slowly got into my mouth over several months and ground my teeth until I had a proper bite. Now, at 71, I have problems because I bite and grind day and night, and I have RA and Sjogren's other chronic disease. There isn't much left of my teeth because of the grinding, plus for other reasons I've lost my upper back teeth. I get a lot of headaches. My current dentist knows nothing, or rather, doesn't care about anything beyond his paycheck. I live in a rural area now and I'm lucky if I get a hello from him.

Wow... I have basically every single symptom that you mentioned...
I'm 42 and have had issues with headaches and teeth grinding since I was like 12.
Was able to stop the grinding at night somewhere in my teens, but the headaches never went away 🫤
The last few years have been very stressful for me and the teeth grinding is back - with a vengeance this time!
Now the pain in my neck, back, shoulders and head is absolutely out of control!

I've always known that my grinding caused a lot of issues and that it contributes to my pain, but I never knew it played this huge of a role in my problems! 🤯
