I love this camera. Already a year with it and it has been a very good experience.

For anyone wanting this camera for video I just want to point out that it DOES have full manual control in video. You need to go to Manual mode - settings - change video mode to manual video and then click across for the video mode and boom!

Regarding 7:00, you need to switch to manual video mode by pressing menu or tapping the video icon. Boom. No more auto change. Can also lock exposure by tapping the asterisk.

I have one. This is the smallest camera with a 1" sensor. It is much more pocketable than any of the Sony RX100 models or the Canon G7X. The point of this camera is to be small enough to fit comfortably in your pocket. That is why it does not have a folding screen. You can take it with you everywhere. If you want more features, then go with a larger camera. For a cheaper alternative, the Fuji XQ1 or XQ2 are about the same size and produce great photos from their 2/3" sensor. No touchscreen though.

Though I'm far behind, I appreciate you making this video. I have a Canon Powershot S120 and moved along to the G9X. I miss some of the physical controls of the S120, but the overall upgrades that the G9X has (12mp vs 20mp for one) were such that I thought it was worth it to move on. I'm obviously commenting on this video over a year later, but it stands to reason that folks such as myself move a little slower when a budget is in contention.

In my view your review is by far the best one I found here on youtube. Despite your reserves I upgraded from S110 to G9 X and I don't regret. Will sell my S110.
Again: Good work!

449 over at BH... not a bad price for something to just drop in your pocket. I have a reward check coming from BH from a recent purchase and I might have to pick up something very small for the casual snapshot.

Bought one and I have to point something out; It does have a full manual movie mode. It can even do slower than 30fps (which is great for me as I sometimes digitize 8mm films at 24fps, 25 is then a bit of a lifesaver ;))

Quite a different reaction reading the specs and trying it out for a day. Somehow the spirit of the S-series (other than price) is in here with a 1" format. Particularly a very comfortably pocketable camera, more so that rX100.

The audio seems really good! I used to shoot in travels with PowerShot cameras, maybe i should consider it again, looking on how they improve these little bears.

The grain pattern is actually really nice! Very organic looking!

Yes nice that Canon has come out with 5 new models with 1 inch sensors - all using the same Sony RX100m3 sensor :) - not a problem - many others buy sensors from Sony - To me the lens is the let down - just like that of the original Sony RX100 - so one is so much better of with the G7X and G5X - yes the G7X a bit thicker but so much better in low light and longer focal range of 24-100 vs 24-80
Yes the IS and Touch LCD are nice -
I think the Sony RX100m3 is somewhere in the middle - has an EVF as a bonus - but no Touch LCD or Shutter which is a downer -
Yes Touch Shutter is awesome - Panasonic and Olympus have let the way there - especially Panasonic -
the RX100m4 is way to much money I think - I say the 4k is just a sales ploy - 5min max 4k video - for me in warm climate I get 3 min before it overheats - so to me it is just worthless - so really the RX100m3 a better value to me - maybe the RX100m5 will be better :)
I find my Canon G7X does better in tracking focus over my RX100m4 - I also find the Mic's on my Canon G7X and G3X are better -
My hope is that Panasonic enters this market and combines the best from the RX100m4 and the G7X and G5X - with their usual great Touch interface and Touch shutter :) as the price will be lower then that of the Sony RX100 models -
Fuji has the X70 coming in 2016 with a 1 inch sensor but odds are it will be the body of the X30 which is much larger -
The G9X is the thinnest 1 inch sensor body so if one needs that ultra small size it is a good option -

i just got the g9x and LOVE it!! thx for the video which made me pull the trigger!

But Ted, just a heads up though, you CAN have full manual control in Video even while recording videos You just have to make sure your in Video Manual Mode, which is in Menu button --> Rec. Mode!

Cheers

Yeah, price has come down, it's $430 as I type this now. Still kind of high for a point & shoot. I'm sure the 1" sensor cost them significantly more than the 1/1.7" one...

Why is this $450 camera being compared to a $950 Sony Rx100 Mk IV?

There is an option to manually set aperture and/or shutter speed for video. Switch video mode to "manual" (hit the movie icon top left and select) - then you can set all manually.

alesadvorak

Just to let you know there is a Manual Video mode when you press video icon at the top left - so you can change ISO, Aperure and Shutter Speed.

Thank you for the thoughtful review. At 11:53 you say "Sony S110", but I'm sure you meant "Canon S110". I noticed because we're both Canon S110 owners, and I was paying close attention. :-) The S110, etc., and this G9 X are incredibly small cameras. The sensor upgrade on the X models is a major attraction.

There's usually a price drop following camera introductions, so perhaps I'll wait for that.
