My life is now complete knowing that every turtle I have petted has felt the fulfillment of scratchies.

The person in the barnacle removal clip glued them on himself. It’s a thing some Youtube channels will do where they intentionally cause harm to animals and video themselves “saving” or “helping” them.

nature really said: "here, have a protective armor. oh and also, you'll feel everything"

Imagine evolving to have armor but you feel the pain your armor takes.

so it's not pointless to pet my turtle now, my mom used to tell me it's pointless that they won't feel it. thanks for the info 😭

When I was little I had a pet turtle name Rosie who loved getting shell rubs. I’d levitate my hand above her and move it away and she’d quickly scoot over and try to lift herself up to reach my hand. I spoiled that old girl until she passed, I’m literally still not over her and haven’t gotten another turtle since 😭💚

I remember seeing a picture showing tortoises intern anatomy: organs, tissues, bones and the shell. And in this picture, it had a mensage saying:
"Remember, the turtle does not live IN the shell. It IS the shell" and this makes a lot of awereness about how these animals live and how things goes for them.

My tortoises are still young and I have an old toothbrush that I use to scratch their shells, they like it. But their favorite is head and chin rubs, they're super shy but if I try to rub part of their chin or jaw that I can reach, they'll slowly stick out their heads because they want more rubs lol. They seem to like chin rubs even more than top of the head rubs and they'll stick their neck out pretty far.

There's something wholesome about finding out you can pet a turtle and they feel it

Remember people, turtles are not inside a shell, turtles ARE the shell.

I was just a kid when I learned that turtle shells were alive. A perfect example is the fact that I grew up with a couple of pet painted turtles and they absolutely LOVED whenever we used an extra soft toothbrush to gently clean the slime off of their shells. They would stretch their necks and legs out and seemingly dance a little jig while the toothbrush made its way around their bodies. It was adorable ❤️

They can hear the silence.
They can see the dark.
They can fix the broken.
They can feel through their shells

It makes more sense for them to have a feeling sensation on their shells similar to how we feel our nails or teeth. I think that’s the most comparable analogy.

Not only are they supergluing and hotgluing barnacles on to freshwater turtles and tortoises, but they’re cutting them off and scraping off parts of the shell. To top it off they’ve literally put the freshwater turtles IN THE OCEAN

I legitimately didn’t know that they could feel their shell. I just figured that it was vibrations transferring from their outer shell being felt by their soft body inside. Very interesting.

For people acting like it’s bad that they feel pain through the shell, it is actually helpful. The whole reason pain exists is so that we are alerted whenever we are injured, if turtles didn’t even know that something wasn’t happening to their shell they likely wouldn’t be able to react to it in time.
