What’s Inside A Turtle Shell?

A turtle can’t crawl out of its shell. In fact, the shell is actually part of a turtle’s skeleton, as much of our ribcage is of ours. But if you could peer inside a shell, you’d find some of the most unusual features in the animal kingdom, such as a butt — err, cloaca — that some species use to breathe underwater.

As a kid I’ve always thought they could just walk out the shell

When I was a kid we left a small plastic pool outside for the winter. It has some water in it to stop it from blowing away. Mid winter I looked in it and noticed a turtle frozen in the water. We all thought it got stuck and drowned or starved or whatever. We thought it was dead. Come spring time that turtle woke up and was swimming in the pool. Blew my mind. It was literally frozen inside a gigantic ice cube for like 4 months and lived.
