I usually throw rock before jumping inn-

To find depth.
The fall timing.
To identify the the force required to launch jump from cliff, as sometimes you got caught with side bushes, trees, stones etc.

And lastly for the encouragement for myself 😄😉😊

No.. its to break the tension. Ive always done it to lighten the impact. Some may do it to get an idea of how deep it is but everyone ive known that jumps with me, checks the water before we go up to jump

I think it’s for timing. They need to know how long it takes to reach the surface so they can enter the water in the correct position. Above a certain height they need to go in feet first.
