Ford's $100 Billion EV Disaster...What Happened?

After seeing Tesla hype surge and EV demand boom, Ford made the fateful decision to go all in on EVs themselves investing over $100 billion into EV factories, battery technology, and research and development. From a sentiment POV, Ford has actually done quite well as the Ford F150 Lightning and the Mustang Mach E have been quite well received. In fact, the Mach E was the 3rd best-selling EV in the US and even outsold its traditional counterpart: the gas Mustang. However, this has not translated all that well to Ford’s bottom line or balance sheet. In fact, Ford is losing tens of thousands on every single EV they sell. Not to mention, they have over $100 billion in debt to manage. To make matters worse, we’re actually seeing a large movement away from EVs right now - specifically to hybrids which Ford originally decided to completely skip. This video tells the story of how Ford did everything right and still ended up with a $100 billion EV disaster nonetheless due to shifting consumer sentiment and the overall state of the auto industry.

If you sell subpar vehicles at luxury vehicle prices, people will look elsewhere.

They stopped making cars people wanted and could afford.

F-150 Lightning was announced as starting at $40, 000.00. It was nearly double that amount when it finally hit the market. The people that might have been interested in the vehicle, couldn't afford it.

They don't make cars anymore, just expensive "SUV". Poorly built with shitty parts.

$80, 000 dollar trucks don't help.

I want a Hilux.

Ford is now famous for maintenance nightmares. The wet belt. The crankshaft with no key slot. In common with many others, you have to remove 19 things to replace some items.

Saw a video, you had to pull the engine to replace oil pan gasket. Ghastly.

The reality of EVs: THEY SUCK!
The 2nd fact that NOBODY has addressed: cars and trucks were far better and lasted longer 30, 40, 50 years ago. Why are we going backwards? So they can keep selling you a new one

The problem isnt making EVs, the problem is making EVs that cost 50% more than the equivalent ICE in order to make windfall profits.

But hey, how much did the Ford CEO and upper management rake in?

Jim Farley has been CEO of Ford for almost 5 years. Time to replace him as he’s not the right person for the job.

Ford lost the point of being a car company. The point is to supply the population with means to move about the country. Some people want basic transportation, some want economy transport, some need utility, some need heavy haulage, some want luxury. Ford used to supply all of these needs. Then they determined that they made little money on some models, but they made big money on certain other models. They wanted the big money and made the conscious decision to let the other makers have the low end market. Essentially they said goodbye to half their customer base. Geez, I wonder why they are failing.

I was going to buy a ford but all the dealers had an additional “market adjustment” charged that was 10-20k! Ridiculous!

These things are too expensive. Very easy to understand.

Imagine if there were no government tax incentives for people buying EV's. When you have to pay people to buy the vehicle...it's not really a vehicle the people want at the fair market price. Which means....people don't REALLY want it. Just like they "want" a Ferrari...but they don't REALLY want a Ferrari.

Corporations need to stop depending on the customer to be the tester, and they need to stop assuming every problem can be solved with an ota update.
