This is the all-new plug-in hybrid Range Rover Sport, and Mat’s about to find out whether you should choose it over the petrol-powered edition!

For starters, it looks pretty striking and is instantly recognisable as a Range Rover Sport. When it comes to design differences compared to the standard Range Rover Sport… Well, there aren’t any! Apart from the charging port towards the rear of the car, the plug-in hybrid and petrol cars are identical.

It’s a similar story on the inside, too! It comes with a large infotainment screen, good quality materials throughout the majority of the cabin, and big, comfortable seats. The only difference compared to the petrol-powered car is some additional screens on the infotainment system, as well as new options on the digital dials to allow you to drive in electric-power mode.

Under the bonnet, you’ll find a 3-litre turbocharged straight-six engine along with an electric motor. The range-topping edition can produce 510hp, which sends power to all four wheels.

As for the price, well it’s pretty expensive, coming in at just under £114,000! But then again, that’s only £4,000 more than the petrol-powered car! So with that in mind, should you just choose the plug-in hybrid instead? Stick with Mat and see for yourself!

Almost like we planned to post the same review of the same car in the same colour on the same day

I feel like Mat reviews the Range Rover Sport twice a year 😀

2.7 tons to 60mph in 5seconds isn’t bad. Super sport cars use to do that and Range Rovers waft around the corners and fly down the straights

That fuel economy for 510 hp is still pretty good, I'm quite surprised

Mat, it's time to step up the quality of the camera equipment

In Finland ICE powertrains are dying in the big/expensive car segment, as plug-in hybrids with far more power and very low emission figures actually cost less than normal diesel or petrol variants. The new BMW 750e costs about €25k less than a 3.0 diesel S-Class...

Reading in uk car magazine a range rover sport Hybrid owner was quoted £20.000 for a new battery, he had to send the battery to Spain or Portugal to get it fix and it still cost around £6000.

PHEVS only exist because of legislation, it only makes sense if you keep charging the battery otherwise it is just dead weight and deteriorates massively your MPG hence buying a petrol only version is not that a bad idea for many people

The price difference is far more extreme in Ireland. The P400 starts at 213, 000 euro, whilst the P440e starts at 138, 000. This also applies to cars like the BMW X5 and Porsche Cayenne.

The whole point of a plug-in hybrid is to be able to take short journeys on electric alone, and then use the engine for the occasional long journey. What is the point if you can even go over 30 miles an hour without the engine kicking in? It’s almost like range Rover aren’t taking this seriously…🙄

Not sure where Matt buys his VW Golf’s from or how the title is relevant 😂

in germany, electric cars have an "e" on their license plate. I once saw a jeep in front of me, i could see the exhaust gases and steam comming out, and then i saw the "e" on the license plate, i couldnt stop laughning because they label a plug in hybrid as an electric car

If the luggage space is the same with or without the batteries then where are batteries? What is the space being used for on the non-EV version?

It’s madness to push around 2.7tons when most of the time there will be only one occupant

The ugliest RR of all time. Long live the L320 and the L322 Autobiography.
