For better understanding of the story it best to watch the original with subtitles. The dubbed don't provide the proper understanding of the story. They even cut little scenes out of the movie in English version. At the end in the original John told mr shurn (Mitchell boyfriend) that he needs to spend time with her prior his conversation with Charlie about him loosing his wife. I assume john loves Mitchell that's why he left his watch with her in the end but it was important he kept his integrity by letting her go as she belong to the man that employed him as a bodyguard. He couldn't afford to make any mistake because it wouldn't be responsible of him or professional so he had to make a hard but wise choice.
