Jet Li vs. Yasuaki Kurata - Fist of Legend (Original Cantonese and Mandarin Re-Sound)

The original Cantonese sound effects for the fight scenes sometimes had a little too much of the "psshh psshh" that was common throughout the 90s' Hong Kong action films especially in the sequence between Jet Li and Yasuaki Kurata. Because I own the Dragon Dynasty Blu-Ray, I decided to take it's Mandarin Dub, which has a much heavier bass in its sound design whilst still maintaining the overall sound style of that era, and spliced it together with the original Cantonese. That way during the dialogue, Jet Li and Yasuaki Kurata are speaking with their actual voices rather than being dubbed by Mandarin voice actors particularly good for retaining Kurata's Japanese lines. The non-dialogue segments have the Mandarin re-sound to accentuate the impact of the hits. Unfortunately the ki-yas, grunts, etc., are in Mandarin so you get a deeper voiced Kurata who often yells "Haizo!". Not to mention the Dragon Dynasty edition uses "dub-titles" which only subtitles the English dub instead of the original Cantonese which means words aren't accurately translated. Though that's more of a problem during the dialogue not shown in the video where Jet Li and Yasuaki Kurata's characters are discussing martial arts philosophy. Otherwise you get the best of both audio versions. The only other issue is that the sounds are slightly altered in each version such as the music and background noise like the rush of the wind both having a different pitch. It can be quite noticeable in this video when it goes from dialogue to non-dialogue but there was only so much I could do about it using iMovie of course. Anyways, I hope you enjoy it! There's something truly wholesome about watching 2 masters competing with honor, dignity and respect to their fullest potential. Its the stuff long lasting love and friendships are made of.

I love how Yasuaki breaks Jet Li's rhythm by "warming up". By the time Jet is ready to fight, he's almost bored until the thunder comes.

This has to be my most favorite movie fight scene. Despite some of the traditional over the top physics in this style of movie, the choreography was top notch. Not to mention the hint of humor they put into it.

I miss these old days when you could talk to anyone in different language yet converse so perfectly

This is cool. Way back when I competed in wrestling, our coach would make us wrestle blindfolded during practice. It was supposed to help us understand what our opponent was doing based purely on weight distribution and resistance. Brings back old memories from days long past. 😢

This is one of my favourite movie fights of all time.I watched this film in the theatre as a teen when i was visiting hong kong back in the early 90s and it blew me away then and still blows me away today. Probably my favourite Jet Li fight out there...

Didn’t know that Yasuaki have 7th, 3rd and 2nd Dan in Karate, judo and Aikido….This dude is a real deal.

The taunting is just awesome. Li's smile when Kurata's character almost immediately picks up on the nuance of his fighting style... Chen Zhen loves a skilled opponent

I love hand-to-hand combat fights in general but the ones where both fighters are pretty much evenly matched and able to lands hits on each other consistently are just 👌 so satisfying. More than the matches where each fighter has periods of landslide advantages during the fight. Excellently choreographed 💯

Regardless of the mechanics involved in pulling that choreography together, it’s stunning to watch.

My friend and I lost our minds the first time we saw this fight. Hands down one.of the best choreographed fights the Li's come back line of "don't worry, I'll show you". Chef's kiss

I grew up watching this sort of fighting, Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, and Jet Lei.

Still brings me so much joy even today.

There is quite a lot of martial arts knowledge in this fight. I like the transitions between various Aikido techniques, defense, etc. Great fight.

This is one of the biggest and best fights I've ever seen on film. Many skills in use within frankly objective and straight styles, a true Martial Arts class.

This was the scene that made me buy the exact shoes Jet Li wore as a kid. Miss this movie ❤

I have been a fan of Yasuaki Kurata since the mid 70s when he usually played the bad guys, most memorable against Chen Sing in many Hong Kong films like "Kung Fu, the Invincible Fist" and "Rage of Wind".

The most interesting fact about this movie is that the story of this movie took place after the story in Fearless. Nice how Jet Li get to portray not only Huo Yuanjia but also his student Chen Zhen as well.
