In STELLAR ADVENTURES RPG (derived from the old British Fighting Fantasy adventure-books), you generate a star-system with some drops of sets of 6-sided dice. Drop 2d6 dice onto a piece of paper and note where they fall. Those are the stars in your sector. The number you roll is the number of planets (or other special things) in that star-system, and sub-tables determine what kinds of planets you've got.

Here’s an idea:
If you don’t have multiple sets of die, you can assign different die to different functions and then mark the spots and roll as many times as you want

Ok this is actually pretty cool as a concept.
Might even be useful for a Rougelike inspired campaign where the players will be exploring a randomly generated world as they progress.

I wish i had enough dice, table, and paper to do cool stuff like this

I find that randomly placing features leads to a world where everything feels isolated and singular. In the real world towns tend to grow around specific important features like fords, natural harbours, or valuable natural resources. While randomness can help form the basis of your world, hand-placing things like rivers, forests, and settlements creates a more integrated and believable world.

I love concepts like these, they’re always very interesting

Using dice to make a map like this always looks like so much fun. I especially like the inclusion of the special point of interest dice, since they’re such a natural way to include potentially plot-important features. Gives me a way to finally use more of my dice sets all at once, too! Lmao

I like this for just a fantasy writing perspective. Books with maps in the beginning ar always a plus to me.

In order to make it look more realistic, you might also want to connect the mountains as long ranges where possible.

Then after that do the same for water features, only connecting them in ways that make sense with the mountains. Rivers tend to flow down from mountains and combine. Isolated water dice can be ponds or springs.

Since towns/settlements can land anywhere, try to think about why they might be in that spot. Towns and cities naturally pop up near water, especially ocean ports and wide rivers that lead to the ocean.

Settlements in out-of-the-way areas could be there for a special reason. A trade route, an oasis, a military outpost, or even a monastery that the pious make pilgrimages to.

While I may not have a giant map-sized paper, I thank you for this video. It is extremely helpful for me who struggles with location design.

That is a great way to outline the beginning of a landmass! I'd still recommend using real life examples of how and why landmarks are the way they are for just that little touch of realism.

I know it's an old short, but I absolutely love this idea. It really helps add to the chaos of world building. and makes it extra fun when you try to invent why things are where they are in world.

I love the idea of using the dice number to help indicate the size of the towns. I feel like you can apply that to other stuff, like mountain size or lake size if you need inspiration.

Ehhhh. This is a really cool tool, and I’m glad it’s out there for other people to use. I’m passionate about making the worlds that my players interact with personally. The randomness just takes away from what I feel is one of the most fun parts of the creation process. Obviously this is subjective, but I’d advise any aspiring (or newly trapped) forever DM to try making a map of their own without such simplifying tools, if only to see if they can find similar enjoyment in the process.

phenomenal tips, even if you use something like Inkarnate this could be really useful for a rough draft. Just take a picture of it, insert as an image, lower the opacity and trace it out. Great for someone like me who get's creative block very easily! Please never stop this content, you are talented, creative, entertaining and helpful!

Umm… damn. This is definitely one of the best dice creation methods you have done yet! Keep them coming!!

I would love to see a video on rolling a world, then fleshing it out.

I can see such a method making the dice goblins very happy.
