Let us know in the comments, do you think the education system needs to do a better job supporting kids who are struggling?

Every single word she said…..I felt. I grew up in the Caribbean and I’ve always felt like something was wrong with me. I barely graduated school and I know I tried my best at it. Now that I know that what I’m dealing with has a name to it. I’m definitely going to get diagnosed for sure. So thank you for this ❤️

Thank you so much for highlighting her story!!! I was diagnosed with dyscalculia smack dab in the middle of the pandemic. It took me being brave and going for a job as a purchasing & inventory coordinator and failing miserably to have a 'nexus event', if you will. Mine developed in my teenage yrs. It was a month before my 36th birthday that I finally received validation. I'm grateful for my educational psychologist, but I do sometimes still feel anger that my struggles in school were dismissed, including constant dismissals from many others throughout my adulthood. Thank you, thank you, thank you again for bringing awareness to neurodivergent disorders ESPECIALLY in the Black Community. 💕🙌🏾

My son has dyslexia and dyscalculia and I fought the schools for years because they kept blaming me for being a single mum. Ontario school systems are failing kids right left and centre still!

I was diagnosed with a learning disability as a child. I am horrible at math, but better at writing, due to not having a TV when I was growing up, & reading to escape boredom. I read all of Judy Blooms books. I read Charlottes Webb & a lot of Madeleine L’engle books (A Wrinkle in Time) & various Harlequin romance novels & historical romance novels. This reading really helped me in writing essays at the University level & I was able to graduate with a B.A.

I sometimes receive compliments about how I write, when I send an email & I know it’s because of that childhood reading. I love words & am always fascinated when I hear one that I don’t know. My phone is full of snapshots of words I have Googled to find their meanings. There *is* hope for all of us who suffer from any kind of learning issue, & I’m so glad she was willing to share her story to illuminate this issue, so people can get the help they need.

This is such a heavy topic in the black community. There isn’t enough effort to address learning disabilities and students simply fall through the cracks of the education system. It broke my heart to hear this, but yet this story quite inspiring.

Thank you for sharing Janielle's story. I was about 8 when I got diagnosed and that was in Ireland in the 80's. She's much younger than me and things should have improved, it must have been so tough not knowing until she was 23. As a kid, we are given the impression that everything will be fine once we get over the learning side of things. I don't know about kids now but they never said how it would affect me as an adult, it's only in the last few years of studying again in my 40s that I realize how hard it is for me to motivate myself, organize my schedule or college work and how my crappy time management causes me so much stress. On the other hand, I'm very witty, articulate, I have a really visual memory (unless it involves words), and the ability to see other people's perspectives.

I can relate as someone who was recently diagnosed with ADHD. I always suspected it but it was dismissed. I went throughout school being undiagnosed and was almost kicked out of University for low grades.

I am 23 years and got diagnosed yesterday and the relief I got was insane, I had an answer at last. after being told I was stupid etc... and unfortunately, the school didn't want to test me, I had to beg to finally get some help.

Incredible story. Glad you found a diagnosis, but God had another plan for you!

"There's a name to it ..." so much pushing to the side is in our very expensive public education systems. Your story needs to be apart of the truly larger discussion being held behind closed doors about education as it applies to People.

I filled everything my whole life. And I wasted $10000 in school and I went down the drain thanks to dyslexia. What do I do now? Now I'm stuck with all the credit card deaths.
