New Speakers Final Assembly and Fixing a Big Mistake

This time I finish putting together the stands and then mount the baffles on the stands. In doing so, I wasn't as careful as I should have been (maybe subconsciously intentional to give myself a good excuse to inlay the walnut) and to fix the problem I routed out the pocket deep enough to glue in a piece of walnut veneer.
The veneer corrects the glue squeeze out / poor fit and also gives the colour contrast I wanted when designing these.
Of course, inlaying the veneer like I did makes it possible to skip routing the pocket through the bottom of the baffle to begin with, and just attaching the baffle directly to the angled upright of the stand directly. I could have even used screws because the walnut veneer would hide them. In the end they would have looked the same but would have taken a lot less time to build. Let's say that's a lesson learned for next time, right?

This is part 6 in my series on designing making a pair of open baffle 2-way speakers to use as "surround" speakers in my listening room.

no matter what the fix is always more work, but its worth it. It's looking great.

Contrasting inlays are always beautiful. Nice solution John!
I would even go further and add more inlay, like a pin stripe along the edges or something.

That dowel marking trick is genius and so low-tech. Shows what can be done when using the brain as your best tool.

Coming along nicely! Change of plans midstream, but still looks great.

Beautiful speakers John, I’ve been itching to build some open baffle, something like the Jamo R909

I reckon using the same dark wood for the filler you used to cover the channel for the speaker wire would be a nice matching finish.

I did notice the string looks like it was caught and glued between the pieces when assembling at 4min point. I thought that was going to be the fix mentioned in the title. If it did get glued, that's going to be more difficult than fishing the wire through.

John, I would have inserted that strip running up to the woofer edge.

Does that PL glue you use hold up better for outdoor wood projects? Compared to like Titebond 3?

Nice way to make a mistake into an accent. I would probably have routed just the joint and inlaid a thin strip of the walnut or used some colored epoxy. I do like your solution as well.

...it looks way better anyway, with this dark wood accent.... This would be the place, where well - known speaker manufacturers would put their logo on.. ;)

Corner chisel would have helped with the glue squeezeout

Wait... did you clamp that loop of string in between the pieces, or did you pull on it off camera? A piece of string may cause a gap problem... 😂

What finish color are you going to use?

Perhaps a little bit of cheating with that solution to the issue, but admittedly the result is very pretty! Great vid, John.

Why are you using construction adhesive instead of wood glue?
