For those wondering, no, iron lung patients didn't actually have their lungs exposed. This is a simulation, so it'd make sense for the 'lungs' to be exposed so you can see how it works. The procedure was non-invasive and relatively painless, especially comared to modern day ventilators, which are inserted down the trachea, the patients having to be heavily sedated. That being said, I can't imagine the mental and emotional toll being confined to an iron lung must have taken on its patients, especially years and even decades at a time. My heart goes out to them.

What happens when an actual person using an iron lung passes away because of old age?? Does the heart stop but the lungs are still going and nothing is happening to the body while the lungs are still getting air?

WONDERFUL VIDEO!!! I myself use a ventilator, and I'm thankful I don't have to rely on an iron lung! Us ventilator patients, whether that be those still using iron lungs, or those of us using modern day ventilators, are SO BLESSED that we have the equipment that can keep us alive!
