Most people that do music tutorials aren't very good singers. You however are the exception, you're very good! And I love your channel man!

On a more serious [and perfectly in pitch] note...  I'm having a surprising amount of success using a super soft bit of auto-tune during tracking.  I'm not blessed genetically with great vocal powers, nor are my vocal chops as fit as they could be as I don't go to the vocal gym every day (nor the other kind for that matter).  I always figured I would be "against" auto tune, but using it while tracking not only gives me much more solid tracks, it actually helps me to sing on pitch better while I'm laying it down.  Best of all, it doesn't make me sound like a robot one little bit.  I always prefer to do things "pre" whenever possible.  Loving your videos Warren, you are a blessing to us all.

Hi Warren. Great video. I know from experience that tuning vocals is a sensitive subject in vocal production and engineers often abuse the auto tune. I like to treat just those bits that need to be tuned without affecting those good ones. That's like you present it in the video.
I like to keep the vocal sounding as natural as possible cause I like those little imperfections that contribute to the song.
One tip about setting the key signature. It's often good to ignore the chords in the music and analyse just the vocal melody line. In your video you could easily set the key signature to D maj as all the notes you sing there are from D maj scale.
Thanks.

I'm in school for Audio Production and Music Management and seriously, your videos have helped tremendously. I swear I learn more about these important details from genius's like you on YouTube than the instructors at my school. Are there any schools you would recommend? like Middlesex University in England? I so want to leave the states lol

Fascinating! And LOVED your voice on this! I even can appreciate some pitchiness when the passion is there. Nice and organic! 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽

I completely understand this method for a self-confessed non-vocalist. Your voice sounds very good for this song, by the way...

For a through-and-through lead vocalist however, I'd just say "let's try it again" until we got a good take.

I only like to use auto-tune as a very relaxed safety net with a very relaxed re-tune setting. I set it around 60 for my voice personally.

As with anything creative, it 100% depends on the material. For a balls-to-the-wall punk song, I wouldn't dare bring up the plugin.

On a pop song, I'll put AT on every vocal track (lead, backup, doubles, etc...) with retune set around 30...or less...or more....

Also, for anyone reading this, autotune isn't the magic wand it's hyped to be. A terrible singer will still sound terrible or worse with autotune. It works best with good singers in material that applies (pop, dance, etc).

Again, that's why my go to technique is to get a great take, then only apply as a loose safety net if applicable.

Autotune is neither good or bad. It just "is." It's just a tool in the tool kit.
