The Real Reason SpaceX Won The Moon Lander Contract - But why was just Space X selected? Is it because NASA wants to start a trend of relying on private companies to ferry people or is there some other reason? This new decision did not sit well with Blue Origin, and they decided to take the matter up legally. In choosing SpaceX, NASA believes that just Elon Musk's Starship can deliver on an ambitious spacecraft design which is far larger than what NASA actually needs. Only a quarter was given from what was requested by the White house for the program and this formed the entire basis of Blue Origin's suit filed in April.

The agency also plans to land the first woman and the first person of colour on the moon by 2024. NASA also plans to achieve the goal of landing the next astronauts on the moon as part of its Artemis program, which the Biden administration has also promised to include the first woman and the first person of colour in the SpaceX vehicle so SpaceX would also have a huge role to play in the Artemis program. SpaceX's Starship is designed to be an end-to-end transport system for transporting or ferrying people to Mars. There would be no need for the Space Launch System SSL or Orion even though NASA has no plans to let go of these vehicles yet. Despite the fact that SpaceX has shown that it can reliably land the booster stage of its Falcon 9 rocket upright, the spent booster stage doesn't currently land with a heavy, pressurized crew capsule on top of it.

Starship is an order of magnitude larger than the Falcon 9 and hasn't yet perfected its landing on earth. NASA also plans to complete a subsequent contract for on- going lunar surface ferry operations which allow anyone to bid on that. What do you think about the SpaceX contract being awarded to Elon Musk's Spaceship? This is good news for Blue Origin and Dynetics because they could decide to self- fund to mature their lunar landing designs in the interim.
